2016 c300 Automatic High Beams
#2
Headlight switch in "Auto" position. Then push turn signal level away from you (Highbeams always on position). It is now set to automatic high beams and the ILS system takes care of everything else.

In Germany (and some other European countries), ILS doesn't necessarily come with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus, and only has cornering lights, motorway mode and country road mode.
Note how Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus is listed as 'only available in conjunction with ILS', and is a separate 119-euro option.
If your car has ILS with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, there should be at least one camera on the top of your windshield (two if your car has the Lane Tracking Package or Driving Assistance Package Plus package installed).
If your ILS system has AHA+, just put the headlight switch into Auto and push the indicator stalk forwards. When the dipped beams are activated, the adaptive highbeam icon should appear below your Agility/Dynamic select driving mode (headlight sign with an A inside) - see the picture from my own instrument cluster.

The ILS is fantastic, although I find the high beam logic to be a little too sensitive to overhead street lighting. As yjchua said, just make sure you have the "A" showing in your light icon. The icon will go from white to green when the high beam becomes active. If you want to go and test it, make sure you pick a very dark road or try the highway (since the lights are often higher there). If you drive in the outside lane the ILS should also illuminate the highway signs and side of the road with the high beam.

Mercedes knows best
At least in U.S. cars, what you can't do is turn the lights on or off! "Auto" refers to automatic high-beam control only; "manual" is manual high-beam control. Only the daylight sensor turns the lights on or off. You can flash the high-beams for signaling by pulling back on the stalk. You can select running lights (or sidelights). That's it.
In New England, we have had several terrible head-on crashes by wrong-way drivers on limited access highways. Some have occurred late at night with no other traffic on the road. The drunks steer for the oncoming headlights, because that's all they can see. My resolve is that if I see wrong-way headlights approaching, I will head for the breakdown lane, stop, and hope I have enough time to turn out the lights. The only way to turn out the lights is to turn off the engine AND OPEN THE DOOR! Merely turning off the engine lights the running lights. These are bright enough to drive by. Of course, opening the door lights the dome light, the puddle light in the driver's door mirror, and I don't know what other lights.

In Europe, automatic highbeams are separate from ILS and is an extra option.
I will attach my original explanation here:
Depends on your market and configuration.
