My tool kit arrived today too. I replaced the runflats with Pilot Sport AS3+'s this week.
It was the last part of my kit (air compressor, plug kit and now tools)
I found it odd, that it was a box of parts and a separate (way too big) bag to put it all in.
So much cheaper in the US, the best I found in Canada was $157 CAD (~$110 USD)
My best guess is that the base plate (shim plate) is to place under the jack base if you don't want to damage your driveway - there are some sharp spikes on the foot of the jack that might cause some damage to concrete or asphalt.
I have a spare that I purchased on ebay and the bag and tool kit that I purchased from an online MB dealer too.
I thought the plate was to put on the dirt or gravel on the side of the road so the jack would not sink while lifting the car. My guess.

Yeah, that makes even more sense, the base of the jack itself is pretty small and would just sink into any kind of dirt or sand.
Thanks for the image. Do you think a med/lg suitcase would still fit in the trunk with the tire in place? Hard to tell how much total height is lost from that angle.
