Retrofitted Illuminated Door Sills on a C450

This weekend I installed the F1 Petronas illuminated door sills on my C450, which came with the basic non-illuminated door sills. I just wanted to share that this can be done (if you don't already know), some things I noticed during the install and also to share the WIS docs. This is not a DIY kind of post but I can always help answer questions for anyone in the future reading this. The install itself is fairly straight forward and not at all difficult, it just takes some time.

Here is the link to my google drive containing the documents that you can download for yourself.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...gZ?usp=sharing

No programming is required and the part numbers are:
  1. A2229000308 for the control box
  2. A2138206702 for the wiring harness
  3. A2056804011 for the F1 illuminated door sills

The WIS document for the install asks you to first release the front SAM module, I did this but then shortly after realized that there was absolutely no reason to do this. So I mounted it back up into place.

The fuse/relay block that you need to access for the install is released by pressing down the two tabs at the top, then you pull it forward from the top. The fuse box will then hang out a bit for you to do the work.

The WIS doc says if there is no appropriate fuse contact that's available to use, then to use a jumper wire at the back of the fuse box between "S7" and "chamber 9" and install the fuse to "S7". Well, I did a continuity test and found a few open spots with constant power but only one that was suitable to fit the fuse holder type that's on the new wire harness.

By design, the fuse holder on the wire harness was only be able to be installed on the right hand side of the fuse box. I needed to install it on the left. The only difference between the left and right hand side fuse slots are how the guiding part of the fuse holder plastic is offset/positioned. So I just cut off the guiding part so it can fit the other side.

The CAN connector on the new wire harness goes here where all the other black colored connectors are.
This is the X30/32 CAN B distributor and if you don't have an open spot available, you can ask the dealership for a "distributor extension adapter line" to add another spot.

Anyhow, here's a few pics after install

Thanks for the post. It looks like a lot of work!

I have never seen those F1 specific items, where did you see their availability ?

I purchased all 3 items from Mercteil because for most items they sell they tend to offer the best pricing. Btw it was easier to get a hold of them for questions on either Instagram or FB, or you can long distance call them during their open hours. At the time I bought the parts they were having technical difficulty processing payments on the direct website.

It's a bit of work in that you must remove the front carpets, some plastics, route the wiring and zip tie it into place. That's the most time consuming part of it all especially if you've not done it before. Oh and removing the existing door sills cam be done fairly quick with the right tools. The wiring harness is all plug and play though.

Hi @BayAreaAMG also added the Illuminated door sills with using your tutorial but my lights are just blinking.

Is there any coding required or could there be a fault in the control box ?

Thanks in advance!

What car model did you install this one on?

There's certainly no coding necessary and the control box takes care of everything by communicating to the car through CAN bus. It would know if doors open or close and would control the lights accordingly. If it is blinking, perhaps faulty control box or it is connected into the incorrect CAN distributer.

[QUOTE=BayAreaAMG;8735572]What car model did you install this one on?

Hi @BayAreaAMG ,

thanks for your answer!

I installed it into my 12/2018 Mercedes S205 so the facelift model of the S205.

I inserted the CAN connection into the white CAN distributor on the drivers side right here:

I shipped the control unit now back to the company I ordered it from and they'll send me a new one. So I'll see if there was something wrong with it.

They said the control unit (A2229000308) doesn't work with the illuminated door sills I have (A2056800535) and will charge me for the whole control unit if they figure out that I crashed it with attaching the "wrong" illuminated door sills.

Doesn't make sense to me... the connector of the door sills fits perfectly in the wiring harness (the one you also used
A2138206702 ).

They are even not always blinking. After about 2-3minutes they stop blinking and are illuminating perfectly at the same time on both sides until I close/open a door. Then something "resets", the lights going off and they start blinking again. So there is something like a connection to the car doors because it gets recognised when I open or close a door. But they don't work like they should.

Isn't it the control units task to control the behave of the lights in the door sills?

So you have the same issue?

Man why is it that hard to find informations about this. I’m searching for weeks now to get informations, bought all that stuff I (thought) I need and it still doesn’t work.

Some says the issue happens to me because I have the facelift model others don’t agree with that.

It’s pretty annoying 😕
