60k transmission service at dealer or independent shop?

So I’m very slowly approaching 60k miles, I called the dealer who at first said I was due for an A service which I was confused about but said ok sure that’s cheap let’s do it and then days later they told me no actually its going to be $1400 for the *basic* 60k service, more (up to like $1800) if I want whatever else more but the transmission oil needs to be changed mainly and cabin filter(along with engine oil) I thought I would that seemed rather high for some fluid changes.

So I’m asking what have your experiences been with this? What’s a reasonable price? I’m thinking of trying some independent shops around the area later this week, want to research them first. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

I would ask the dealer to document exactly what's being done at the 60,000 mile service in addition to changing the oil and transmission fluid that would cost $1,400.

I suggest that you get quotes from well-rated local German auto indie shops for the same maintenance items so you'll know what the dealer premium is. Its shocking how much more dealers, especially German auto dealers, charge for routine service that generally requires no special eqpt or tech training. Make sure they use Mercedes-approved fluids (list available on MB website) and OEM filters.

If you are going to keep the car, get a price from the dealer for the three year pre-paid maintenance plan. My recollection is that it is not much more than they are charging you for the sixty thousand mile service. I did that at the fifty thousand mile service and came out way ahead for 50, 60, and 70 mile service visits.

Someone need to pay $1,400 for several fluid changes so that the dealership can maintain the luxury building, give customer free coffee, provide employee for paid vacation, medical insurance, bonus, cars, and hire receptionists.

60k service is engine oil change($60+30min), transmission fluid change($150+1hr), and brake fluid change($30+30min), and air/cabin filter replacement($70+30min), and checking vehicle(+30min). It would take 3hr total labor ($150x3hr = $450). I guess $350 for DIYer, $700+~for indie, $800+~ for dealers.

While that does seem high, I'd certainly shop around. However, if you don't already have a relationship with a good indy they may try and take you for a ride as well. Hard to say, but as realeric pointed out, the prices for those services can vary.

I paid $225 at an independent MB repair shop. I had my first one done at the dealer and paid a little over $500 if I recall correctly. I'd definitely shop around.

I had the 60K transmission service performed at an indie shop. Cost:

Pentosin fluid/filter kit -$175 (FCPEuro)
Labor - 2.5 hours at $150/hour (East Cost prices. Dealer is $190/hour)
Total $600 after taxes/supplies

this is not a drain/fill procedure, fluid has to be pumped in at a certain temperature, etc. I do a good amount of DIY on my car but won’t touch this since it isn’t drain and fill.

I'm shopping for the Transmission Service for my 2016 GL-450 right now.
The best price I could find in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area (between 3 dealers and the 3 best indies in my area) was $677.95 + tax at the Mercedes-Benz of Pembroke Pines.
Everything else I do myself (oil changes, cabin filters, engine air filters, plugs, brakes), but the transmission is just too delicate. Since it's only every 70k miles anyway, I do suggest to do it at a dealer.
Cheers guys.
