Sunroof - what’s the glass type and what’s UV protection level

Hi

i am primarily concerned about UVA and UVB.

I know laminated glass blocks 99 percent of UVA and UVB. But tempered glass only blocks 27 percent of UVA while blocking 99 percent of UVB. (All glass blocks 99 percent of UVB)

From window markings, I know windshield is laminated (AS1) but all side windows and rear window is tempered (AS2)

so I put ceramic tint (35) on all side windows and rear windows. So no worry about UV there.

But I can’t figure out the property of the sunroof glass.

does anyone know

1. is the sunroof glass laminated or tempered.

2. the sunroof glass appears to already have factory tint. What kind of tint is it. Does this tint reduce UVA? If so. By how much?

thank you very much

Hi, I can't answer all of your questions but I assume you are talking about the factory fit Panoramic sun roof. It is most certainly tinted and I would suspect it is also Tempered as I have seen on anther MB forum that a couple of them have been known to shatter, lord knows how

Sunroofs are typically tempered. Anecdotally you see posts about them shattering.

Regarding tint I'd email Webasto, the manufacturer and ask...or you can go to an auto glass shop and they can measure the tint.

Others have reported the black panel between the glass and windshield has started to peel. One of the reasons I had my whole car ceramic coated bumper to bumper including the rims that has a UV protectant in the coating.

Have it on 2018 GLE43. I will never again get a panoramic roof again until they replace the sheer slider to a solid one and add the option to lift the rear moon roof with the slider closed. It gets SOOO hot in the cabin during the summer. Even with the slider closed and because it's sheer, the sun beats down on my head (shaved bald head) so I have to wear a hat while driving in the summertime. I have a 2021 GLE53 ordered Feb with June build (too dang long for me. I want it now. Hehe) and happily did not order the pano roof.

It'd be great if MB published official figures, but I haven't found anything yet. Based on some tests I've found in the past, though, the windshield and sunroof blocks pretty much most of UVA and UVB, but the side windows have fairly poor protection. I do love the pano roof in my '19 C63S coupe, though. I pretty much keep the slider open most of the time for an open and airy feel. Not sure about above poster's experience in the GLE, but this is my first car where I keep the shade open most of the time and it doesn't get hot or blind me constantly. Shaved bald head here, too, under the California sun and my car is black with mostly black interior. I don't even bother closing the shade when parking the car in the sun. I do have seat ventilation, though, which helps with cooling down the hot seats after the car has been parked in the sun. The convenience open feature from the key fob opens all the windows and pano roof and turns on the seat ventilation, so that lets escape most of the heat before I get in.

Why are you so precise about the UV ?

From my experience, the ceramic tint has a haze of you look at it on a sunny day you will see what I mean.

It's a plastic painted piece, it's going to peel both ways.. I'm thinking of getting it wrapped in piano black

Have you found out if your sunroof blocks UVA? If it's a tempered glass, which I guess it is, then UVA penetrates it. Window ting installer said high IR heat rejection films could cause shatter and recommended me 50% IR heat rejection film that blocks 99% UV.

Rear privacy glass windows are getting 98% IR heat rejection film which blocks 99% UV as with most films.

I have contacted Webasto the manufacturer of the pano sunroof and they plead ignorance of the UV factors and suggest contacting MB. A call to their customer service hotline was as useless as I had anticipated. They could not answer, actually read me the verbiage from the owners manual. So I tossed it back to the dealership.

Webasto reply-In your case, it is a series-installed roof, i. H. Your vehicle has already been equipped with it at the Mercedes factory and delivered to you. Although this is originally a Webasto product, it was sourced from Mercedes as part of a Webasto series contingent.

Since this panorama roof is only installed ex works, we would like to ask you to contact Mercedes customer service or your dealer, who will have to provide you with information about this roof. Unfortunately, neither we nor our service partners have any product-specific documentation for this special roof.

After striking out with Webasto I emailed 6 customer groups in US and Germany. Received just one reply telling me what I had relayed in my email. However, one CS said that the side windows and pano achieve 60-70% UV absorption. Know this is bull**** as the side windows are uncoated tempered glass and would achieve 40% at best. So I sent two more emails to VP’s to see if they reply. It’s fascinating that they do not acknowledge email receipt nor do they reply.

so I should finalize this thread. Took it to a tint shop and they measured the UV absorption of the panoramic sunroof at 68%. As this is far too low to have over your head, I had them install >99% tint on it. It is a bit cooler and don’t have to worry about the uv.

Thanks for this information, it is helpful as now we finally know the amount of tint, odd number for MB to choose for sure, doesn't it make more sense if it was at 70% or 80%, why 68%?

UVA or UVB or both? I'd say this. I'm bold and need to wear a hat or I get sunburned on top of my head out in the open. I've never gotten sunburned while driving for hours with the shade retracted, so the UV protection seems to be sufficient.

Not sure either. Here is their reply from last year - “The windshield blocks 97% of UV-A radiation and 99.9% of UV-B radiation.
• All other glass, including the sunroof, block 65-70% of UV-A and 99.9% of UV-B

The 68% was measured with a uv meter.

That's what I thought. The most harmful is UV-B. It's responsible for skin burning and I always thought all glass pretty much blocks UV-B completely. UV-A is associated with skin aging and while both contribute to skin cancer risk, UV-B is much more harmful. BTW, heat comes from Infrared and not UV, so if you wanna reduce the heat in the cabin, you need a film that blocks infrared.
