Was MB service to destroy my Engine using the wrong Oil?
Back in 2018 I purchased a 2017 C300 Base model sport package with 6,500mi. When 2019 came around my service A notification came up, scheduled my appointment, and was off to have my first Mercedes service A at a little over 10,000mi. When I got my special SERVICE A $588.00 bill for LETS BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES PEOPLE a oil change/filter replacement and a complimentary service department manager who tells you that there is nothing wrong with your garage kept car but if you would like, maybe we sell can you some unneeded tires next week so lets schedule an appointment. So now its 2021 living in Sunny South Florida COVID not over but okay with bringing in my car that now has 14,000mi on it for some service A2 otherwise known to me as the special $600.00 oil change/ filter oh and a little bit of upselling so Nope, not happening this time. This is my concern, I decided to do a oil change myself since everything is attainable through the bonnet (Fancy for Hood) so I I’ve been backtracking and looking at my 2019 service bill which is telling me that when they did my actual oil change and new filter replacement, they used a Mercedes Special Blend 5W30 oil instead of CORRECT SAE 0W40 oil that my owners manual says is a MUST and to USE ONLY! This car has the M274 engine that supposedly can have some type of weird piston crack issue from what I’ve read in some posts in the different Forums. I live in South Florida where its like Fire here all year long so do you think this lower viscosity oil could have aged my engine a bit causing more wear and tear after being a thiner grade or don’t worry about it your overthinking things. I never drive in SPORT mode custom only nursing the pedal doing probably about 5 miles a week if ol’e Stella is lucky but what if I was a I-95 driver that did an hour or more commute each day with Mercedes Benz special 5w30 Motion Lotion would I even have an engine left? FYI this is same dealership that parts Quoted me $478.00 for a battery that I would have to install myself they told me the OEM battery I was quoted from another MB dealer must not have been offering the new and improved battery with the special Flux Capacitor nonsense so them he’ll no and decided to trek all the way out to West Palm Beach for a battery hundreds cheaper MB OEM. Its awful what dealerships do. With a new OEM oil filter im Planning on doing the Mityvac MV7201 suckem dry procedure and replacing the oil with Mobil1 FS European Car Formula 0W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. What are your thoughts pics below

I checked my bill it mentions 5W40. But if you look at approval code 229.6 which is indicated on your manual it refers to 5W30.

Checked my bill from April this year on my 2017 c300. It also was 5w-30. Base model Batteries are about $300. But many are in backorder because of COVID which increases the price because lack of supply

It looks like they choose the oil grade as per the climate of the country. I live in Lebanon quite hot in summer that is why they chose 5w40.

HanksC3_4Banger, no worries at all, you're totally fine. My primary concerns with oil are; quantity, contaminants and sludge. As long as the oil is slippery and can get to where it needs to be at the time it needs to be there, it will reduce friction and thus, wear.
Blackstone Laboratories is well-known for oil analyses and they "know" oil. This page may be helpful: https://www.blackstone-labs.com/oil-viscosity/
Yeah, oil changes and "service intervals" are a huge cash cow for MB. I don't blame them, they are in business to make money. Nothing wrong with that. When you break it down, none of this is rocket science and can be done by anyone with fair mechanical knowledge at substantial savings.
