I recently rented a Mazda. It's the same as W205 in terms of control -- no touch screen but a dial and button. Interestingly though, it support Android Auto. It's not as good as with a touch screen. But with the voice recognition working really well, it's still a very good experience

I wonder if MB will every release support for Android Auto on this model without touch screen.

It already is supported in 2019+ models via the Smartphone Integration. In some markets it's an extra cost option, but here in the USA it's standard. The 2019+ models have an upgraded COMAND system with a wider center screen. No touchscreen like before. I have an iPhone so I use Apple CarPlay in my 2019 C63S coupe.

What about the older model? Is that just software upgrade?

Nope. Different hardware and software. There's no upgrade path. That's how it works. The cabin tech is usually upgraded during a facelift. MB did offer a Smartphone Integration package for 2018 models, but it wasn't compatible with COMAND. You had to option either COMAND or the Smartphone Integration. It can technically be retrofitted in older models as long as they don't have COMAND. Your best bet is aftermarket. There are aftermarket Android head units that replace COMAND and there are also hardware modules that add Android Auto/CarPlay by splicing into the video feed to the display. They all require taking apart the center console to install.
