Need an advice importing Canadian W205 to USA

Hey guys,

Need your advise on importing a 2020 C300 Canadian financed car to the USA. Is it worth it? I still owe almost 45k Canadian on it. They said I need to pay it off. It has 30k km on it. And it is on 0.99% rate.

Is it worth selling the car here and buy a new one there? Or should I pay it off and then import it to the USA?

I would say that depends on how much you'd pay to get a similar car in the USA. Generally, I believe cars are cheaper here than in Canada. Another thing to consider is the region difference. If you have the digital instrument cluster, then it's easy to change the speedo to mph, but if you have analog instrument cluster then you have to get a template to replace the kph scale. You may not care about continuing to see temperatures in Celsius, but a common complaint of Canadian cars sold in the USA is that the temps are displayed in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit and there is no user controllable setting to change it, so you may find it difficult to sell the car later if it comes to that. The maps cover both Canada and the USA, so you should be fine, but the Mercedes me connect service may be an issue. I believe they do roam at least for a temporary trip, but not sure what happens when you decide to renew them or if all services actually work. Since your car has a Canadian VIN you may not be able to renew the services in the USA.

Biggest issue perhaps is that the warranty doesn't transfer, so you'd be giving up the remainder of the factory warranty.

Thank you for the information. I have an extended warranty. It has digital cluster too. But I guess then it make sense to sell the car over here and buy a new one there.

obviously you aren’t going to get a .99% interest rate.
Why do you have to pay off the loan?

Because I am moving to the US permanently and will be importing the car there.

Did Toyota/Lexus say you have to pay off the loan? I would think that as long as you make payments, they wouldn’t care.

In order to import car in the US if I move there permanently (it is by law), I will need a letter from Mercedes Canada saying that the car is fit to drive in the USA. To get that letter I have to pay off the loan. That’s what they said.

Moreover I will lose all the warranty.

What does Toyota have to do with this? But to answer your question in addition to the above. You also can't export a car with a lien on the title. The car is collateral for the loan, so the lender isn't gonna let you export it, and then when you default on the loan they can't repossess it. So the loan has to be paid off, in order to release the lien on the title.

1. You're not going to get a finance rate like that in the U.S. That's unheard of. I got a 1.99% back in 2012 and thought that was low.

2. There's enough C300s on the market here but may not have equivalent options.
e.g. Most C300s are not going to have dynamic headlights but they do exist if you're patient.

3. Cars here are about 3K less with prices starting to drop.

If you're trying to pull some equity out by selling then owe less on the next car that's possible. Of course it depends on which U.S. state
you register the next car in. Some states are higher than others and some have no sales tax.

Yes my car is fully loaded with driver assist package and multibeam led lights. I owe more than car’s value.

I cannot figure out what to do. Sell this beauty and drive something else (something cheaper) when I move to the US. Because the finance rates are like 8.5% or something in the US. Plus fully loaded Mercedes C300 is around 60k USD.

You'll only get top dollar by selling it privately. It's possible a buyer pays more to bring down the negative equity.
