Rear fog light mistery

Is it just one light or must be two? We are having heavy fog in our area and I push rear fog light button. What I see is the bright light on the left side and nothing on the right. Hmm. Manual says fog light. Not lights. Should I plan visit to dealership or it's by design?

I believe it's just one, like all my previous cars back in Europe had.

Kind of strange aproach. Why not two? Motobike cosplaying?

The general idea is for cars behind not to have the impression you are hitting the brakes, hence just one side turns on.

I thought it was forbidden in US because it was not available in any car I’ve owned here before. Maybe the law changed

edit: just found this after a quick google search:

”Rear fog lights aren't mandatory per DOT so most carmakers just exclude the option. It would probably confuse most drivers into thinking you have a faulty brake light that's permanently on because they are so uncommon in the US.”

Why was the third brake light invented?
In 1986, the Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL) – or what we all think of as the “third brake light” – was mandated for use in the United States. The theory, of course, was that a brake light placed higher and more prominently at the back of the car would help to prevent rear-end collisions.17 Sept 2023

Mistery.
Great compound play on words.
I get it, but it started out for me as a mystery, shrouded in fog and mist … ery.

It is engineered to be only on the driver side of the vehicle, the side of the vehicle closest to oncoming traffic

US model has a single fog light on the driver's side rear, in the AMG line model, there are no forward-facing fog lamps.

Like other forum members mentioned, MBs has only one side. MB themselves (I couldn't find it anymore) once said exactly what another forum member mentioned (it is to not be confused as a brake light). That said, not all German companies are like this, I heard audi does two rear fog lights.

Interesting point about how something as small as a rear fog light can draw police attention—many drivers really overlook these details. It’s a good reminder to stay aware of vehicle rules and how they’re enforced. For anyone curious about traffic-related cases or how such issues are officially handled, checking resources like Spartanburg Traffic Court can be helpful. Situations like this show how everyday driving habits can quickly turn into formal matters. Staying informed definitely saves time and stress later.

I also thought I read somewhere once that it is only on one side for parking on side of the road reasons. In some places in Europe, some cars are half on road, half on sidewalk. And those lights help with something? Not sure what. Every MB I've ever had has had the rear fog standard. I believe my SAABs did too. U.S. spec cars here.

That is something different, the parking light, which keeps the taillight of the desired side on depending on which side you signal (or some other models use a different method to trigger it), it doesn't use the fog light. ie. https://www.mercedescla.org/attachme...9334-jpg.7292/

Just a design choice. Audis have two rear fog lights at least on the SUVs. EU allows if you have one or two fog lights, but if you only have one, it must be on the driver side.
