2012 CLS 63 in Snow (Help PLS)

I've just driven a '12 CLS 63 with PP (bone stock otherwise) to Utah, and will be trekking forward to Colorado in the next few days. So far, the roads and highways have been perfectly fine and clear of snow. Yet one or two driveways/backroads here in UT have a light snowpack and as soon as I drive on them, there is absolutely ZERO traction.

I've got about 100-150lbs of salt bags in the trunk now just to help out with traction, but can anybody recommend any chains/chords/straps for the wheels to help out with traction? Snow tires are not an option; I'm only here for another day, then drive to CO, then drive back to CA in early January. I'm praying the highways to CO and back to CA will be drivable in this car, but at this point I just need any and all advice I can get from some AMG owners who live in a winter wonderland.

Thanks everybody.

Check les Schwab or discount tire. They should have easy chains, or the quick cord style ones. They are pretty cheap and will get you through. Be damn careful on your drive, it can get pretty hairy on the I70 and the I80. I've lived in SLC all my life, and made the drive you are about to make many times. Take your time, leave yourself some space and watch out for the jackasses in 4 wheel drives that think they are invincible.

Thanks, this is precisely the advice I was looking for. I'll call LS and Discount Tire today. Just reassuring to know that it is doable.

My recommendation is to rent a car and have the cls trucked home. If that's not an option I would drive in M and bogg the engine/ie drive in a higher gear then needed to start. Start off in 2nd or 3rd.

Ahh sorry thought you were asking for tips for the drive not just recommendations on chains and chords.

I live in a cold part of the world. I put snow tires on my E63. Wouldn't even try to drive with the stock Pirelli Pzeros in the snow; that would be simply dangerous.

Just out of curiosity, did your cars have the oem 18" or 19" rims? Did you get a separate set of rims for the winter tires, or are you planning to just mount and unmount tires then the season changes? If you got a separate set, is it 18" or 19"? What's the winter tire brand and model you have chosen?

Yes, I have gotten stuck one time last winter and I almost thought I wouldn't be able to make it home with the Summer Conti. Thus it's now Michelin XIce on my other RWD car whenever there is a possiblity of snow or ice on the road. Man, those winter tires are amazing. It's now not as easy for me to drift that other RWD car with an open diff in the winter.

I have OEM 19 inch rims on my current E63. I don't have dedicated winter rims; I just swap tires with the season. The only ones I could find to match the specs of the stock tires were Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II: 255/35-19 up front and 285/30-19 at rear. I've been happy with them. Our roads are often icy and snowy, and these tires have worked well. One has to respect the car in such conditions of course, regardless of what tires one is running.

Thanks. That sounds like a good viable option: To simply swap the tires. Of course having an extra set of rims with winter tires would be nice, but the extra hassle needed to sell the set after the car is gone might be too much hassle. It's too bad the rims cannot really be universal fit.

I did the same with my 2010 E63, which had OEM 18 inch rims. I also would prefer a second set, but I just don't feel it's worth the money.

Did you also go with the Pirelli Winter Sottozero Serie II at 255/285 for the 18"? Or did you go with another tire brand?

I have Blizzak's mounted on a separate set of 19" wheels for my winter setup. Everyone and their brother advised that I go with 18's, but I still opted to stay with 19's to try and keep the looks similar. I ended up getting 255's all the way around (basically 4 front wheels) rather than going staggered since a narrower tire is more beneficial in the snow.

The rear wheels do look "tucked" but to me it's worth it for the added traction. I suppose I could get spacers, but I'm on my 3rd winter with this car in the upper Midwest and so far the look hasn't bothered me too much.
