The E55 sounds like a car with soul but no life, real sleeper. The CLS just really sounds awesome. I cant quite describe how it sounds but its pretty damn amazing. While not as bad *** sounding as the SL55 it does sound pretty damn close.

Rob Allen at the AMG challenge at Road America said it was all in the exhaust. The CLS was tuned differently and definitely sounds better. If I remember right, there were 6 E555's, 1 S55 and 1 CLS55 on the main track. Everyone turned their heads when the CLS went by.

When AMG had their school at Calif Speedway you could really tell the difference between the E55 and CLS55, hearing the cars coming out of the corners. You could close your eyes and tell it was the CLS 55.. Much deeper and more of a big block V8 sound. Very close to the SL55 exhaust note.

The CLS55 has a very "COOOOOL" sound to it. It reminds me of a sophisticated version of a 1970's to 80's (before the "Tin Can" sound of current high performance exhaust systems) hard running and modified Small Block Chevy V8 with a good high performance exhaust system on it. Smooooth and AUTHORITATIVE! Or it almost sounds like a low flying P51 air craft when it goes by at WOT. Makes the hair on my the back of my neck stand on end just thinking about it!

a few...
CLSs sound incredible.
It would be amazing if someone made a kit or something to make an E sound this way, the CLS just makes the E sound like a muted beast. When the E passes by, it hums but when the CLS goes by... it really does sound like a healthy small block.

Then question would be.....could we slap on the CLS exhaust if we wanted to.
Guess it would be a resonator and muffler issue right?
Be interesting to see what the sound would be like.

Jakpro1 - Well the CLS is on the same chassis as the E55, so its exhaust system can't be to far off. One thing I did notice was the size of the tail pipes on the CLS55 look like they are 3" Dia. (can't be sure about this, did not measure them) and from what I can gather from the Guys that have been modifying there E55 exhausts, 3" Dia. tail pipes are larger than the tail pipes on an E55.

Ditto, CLS55 and E55 are both on the same platform with same drive trane. Should be and easy swap of exhaust.

As Duane stated, the SL55 just sounds BAD ***. Its very menacing and just scares the **** out of you when you smash on the throttle or let alone turn the car on. It has a very deep sound that makes you feel like the engine is going to come flying out at you.
Hell an SL500 sounds better than the E55 many times.
