Thumbs up CLS63 vs 996TT with chip...

Today, driving around looking for some fun...spotted a 996TT, sliver...got behind him...traffic broke...in second...he pulled a bit(it is always tough when behind someone), he was in the right lane, I hit third, pulled into the left lane and I started to pull hard...and then we hit traffic...we stopped and spoke...he had the '04 996tt chipped...said that it has around 470HP...He couldn't believe how much power I had...I had fun!

very nice run you must have some serious power

I have a 996tt..haha last night i had a liltle race myself.

A wagon R/t vs SS vs my TT... haha the guy in the SS is my friend, nad i was like hey lets play with the wagon.. i guess he didnt see the r/t because he said 'it just a wagon' haha but yea i smoked both of them...but i think it would have been closer i they didnt have traction problems. My friends SS is pushing 400 at the crank.

Awesome kill. I am amazed at how much power the 63 has for a NA motor. Its linear and smoooooth.

Thanks...I wanted to mention the run-in I had with the new Z06 but then I'll hear all these folks calling BS on me...but here we go...

On the road after I met up with the Porsche, I was heading to the highway and a there he was a couple of cars in front of me, red with a black strip on the hood...so I quickly got behind him...as we merged...he hit it...a bit of a jump but I caught right up with him...he couldn't leave me...then we hit some traffic...

All I have to say is that in real-world driving situations, sometimes races are very, very close...

Great stories.
You said you were pulling on the porsche in third. If there was more room, do you think you would have caught him?

The Z06, were you the same distance from the Z06 after you punched it until after you let off?

Great runs. I have raced the previous version corvette with no problem. The new ones, I heard they are monsters.

(996TT) Yes, without being smug, definately....I was pulling quite hard.

(Z06) Yes...I was a bit surprised though...only because I've never raced a 'stock' Z06...everytime I meet up with one, and speak with the driver afterwards, they all have had mods of some sort done...

Agreed! Anything can happen in a short race. I was beat by a Pontiac GTO at the 1/4 mile track. His time: 12.89 @108mph vs mine 12.91 @124.5mph. So, who has the faster car?

Let's be honest. All things being equal the ZO6 is much faster than a CLS63. On the street or track many variables come into play and many times less powerful cars can make a good showing. A well driven ZO6 is a mid to low 11 second car at 125MPH+ A well driven CLS63 is at least 1-1.5 seconds and 10mph slower through the traps. Hardly comparable.

BTW- I love the CLS63 and would choose it over a ZO6 any day......... as long as I didn't plan on spending a lot of time at any tracks.

Agreed as well...the Z06 is really not an everyday driver like my CLS...also, back to the runs on the roads...where you are in your power band will definately help out!!!

About the track thing...I agree...I wouldn't have purchased the CLS if I was driving the track to and from the office...

I am one of the guys that really, only cares about 'every-day-driving' situations...not track...I feel that my CLS is one of THE BEST 0-100 out there...my buddies M6...awesome from 100 - ? but I'm not doing that often at all...Z06 pull some awesome 'gs' in the corners...but how ofter am I hitting it hard in the corners?

I love my CLS...

Why would you be amazed - it has less than 100HP per liter, by today's standards that is pretty sad.

Not a chance, man. Even with stock exhuast, a Stage I 996tt blows 1.1 bar. I've owned 6 of them and I've recently driven two e63's and one CLS63 trying to convince myself to trade my M6.

There's no possible way an adequately performing and competently driven 996tt won't kill an e63. It's a lovely car, but it don't pull harder than a chipped 996tt.

jamie140: What the hell are you driving a convertible up there for? What do you have about two months a year of top-down weather?

CLS53AMGGUY,

You are right about the power band. There was one time after a roll (30-35mph), I punched it against an G35 coupe(exhaust). He actually pulled on me until I hit my powerband because I was in 2nd gear already. For that 1-2 seconds, I was like "what the hell". He stopped pulling and I slowly started to real him in, except we ran out of room. I am sure he counted that as his kill, but, I learned a lot about the spacing of the 5 speed gears.

If you and in 2nd gear between 30-45 mph, the E55 will take a 1-2 seconds before it takes off.

When I drove the CLS63 in "D "between 30-45 and punched it, it went much faster than the E55 in "D".

Agreed that a chippd 996TT really should have the legs on a 63.

BTW- Why do want rid of your M6? I'm very curious as that's what i'm going for next. From the outside looking in, it seems the perfect all rounder.

I kept (and loved) my M5 for almost a year. Figured I'd love the M6 as much. It's tighter, drives lighter and very fast - maybe I'm just bored with M's. Plus, I've never owned an MB. When I'm thinking clearly I figure I'll wait until next year and check out the twin turbo e63.

Being bored with Ms won;t be a problem for me as i've never owned one, despite flirting with the E46 M3 on many occasions. Two final questions;
Has SMG been reliable in your experience and does the M6 retain the characteristic motorsport trait of feeling as fast as it is?

In 31k kms. I had only 4 'red cog of death' experiences that resolved themselves immediately. None with the M6. I think you will find that any problems with the tranny are very limited.

The M6 is crazy fast and feels that way all the time. It's like a caged animal. I washed it yesterday and fell in love all over again. I think I'm going to keep it and just add an sl600 with some serious mods.

Just what I wanted to hear. They are an absolute steal in England (available for £59k with 9,000 miles from their £81k list) so when i move back in June that's the first thing i'm getting. I'm going black/black and have even cleared the purchase with my significant other. What color is yours? Interlagos looks great but in black they look like pure evil.

By the way, congrats on your decision to add to your stable rather than replace.

I think a stage II (chip + exhaust) 996tt would be a tad faster.

obviously the guy wanted to lose and embarass himself as the 4 door four thousand plus pound CLS pulled on him, likely scenario. Guy prolly said"screw this"

weird how when the folks on the other boards post a kill, its wow, nice kill, neat story, post a video.....etc. When the cls guys post its all about the failure of the other driver. I wonder why? Is this the CLS 55/63 forum? Next time I race I will pick on a PRIUS, and see what responses that garners.
