CLS63 Owners id like to hear your comments on the cars handling.

Well I was taking delivery of an E63 next week today I go to finilize the deal but the car still hasnt arrived but they had a designo CLS 63 there. Practially the same in every critical dimension to the E so they should feel the same.

Now prior I also had a deposit on an M5 down the road which i drove right before i went to MB today i love the M, hate the looks, hate i drive.

I took the CLS 63 out and clearly was dissapointed in the steering feedback through turns and airmatic. The BMW M outhandles the AMG hands down this is my opinion based on where i drove both cars today. I know magazines give the AMG better ratings.

I never was a fan of anything "Airmatic from Mercedes, Audi, jaguar" it just doesnt give the same feel as a fine tuned shock and spring combo.

Clearly the Mercedes whether a CLS or E 63 looks far better than the M, has more class and luxury any day but the confidence wasnt there when I drove this CLS 63 hard today in NY. I tried all levels of the airmatic too.

I mean i see post on all these forums on 0-60 and 1/4 miles and stuff but do any of you guys drive hard other than on a drag strip?. I mean how often am i hitting 120MPH i rather be doing 80-90 through 10 miles of twisties and this is where most of my driving is.

I also hit the RPM limiter in every single gear til 4th, it cuts power and then ESP comes on its like too intrusive i wasnt going to take it off on a 112,000K that wasnt mine.

Lend me your thoughts if any of you have compared these two cars.

The CLS63 will never handle like a BMW?But it will handle the twisties nicely in airmatic 2 and in manual. The 030 package is necessary for the twisties as it stifins the suspension , provides massive breaks and LSD. Car will stick with M5's to a point but it never feels like one. It is so much better a daily but for a road course you should take something lighter than the 63 or the 5. You would really need seat time to get the 63 around the track in the same time you could the M5, it may never happen but the two cars are not worlds apart. Real similar power band and gearing

well I have driven alot of cars and buy alot also The 63 is by far the best handling car I have yet to drive. I drive hard and fast. From the C5/ C6 vette, to the 5 /7 BMW, After driving the 63 cars at the AMG challange at high speeds I must say they stick to the road.. It also depends on how you drive.. I have seen these cars in action, I did the hot laps at California Raceway with Tommy Kenddle? (not sure on the last name) but he also stated that he was amazed at how well these cars handle .

Thanks for agreeing with me here the 030 may be a big upgrade but there was no chance for me to drive one, I am just surprised how light the BMW feels through switchback turns. It is something in the Mercedes design with the airmatic and steering system that just feels a bit odd to the cars i have owned and driven i just dont know if i would ever get used to it.

I need a 4 door for the family etc my other toy is a C4S Cabrio which is a blast.

I had about 45 min of seat time in a CLS 63 for the most part i think i got a good feel because 1 hour prior i did the same drive in the BMW.

SOme peole swear the Maserati Quatroportte is invincible i have driven this car for a few days and to be honest it didnt impress me at all plus to me it is underpowered.

Many awesome cars on the market now but clearly everyone has their own taste and driving habits i really hate to buy a car based on styling rather than the performance and handling. The only other cars that actually blow my mind are out of reach for now, Aston, Ferrari and new Porsche GT3 RS, driven them all and would die for one of these now.

from hearing feedback the BMW M is a POS, i had a older 550I sport which was the biggest lemon of all time. This also hinders me pulling the trigger.

Now I wonder with all these lowering modules if this would help the AMG at all?

Clearly when Mercedes built a purposeful car such as the SLR and CLK63 Black they went with coilovers for a reason, i dont think any real performance driver would take the car seriously if it was airmatic.

I compared the two when I was about to trade my 06 M5 for an 07 M5. When I drove the E63, it was nice, fast and beautiful, but I just couldn't get the thrill that the M5 gave me. I wish I could have an M5 that LOOKED like the E63...

You are so correct. Here is how you get the thrill. Put an E63 in DYNO MODE, then drive it as if you did not haveto make the payments...Car is super fun with out all the interference. My CLS will drift, burnout, slide, smoke, cruise to dinner and obtain 23 mpgWOOOOOOOooOOOOOOOO, glad you made it !

sure sounds like you already know what you want. whats up with all the questions?

all the cls drivers here bought theirs over an m5 for a reason. it's better all around vs the m5. yea, maybe the m5 handles better, but do you actually drive these cars at 100% of its capability 24/7? honestly, i wouldnt even go with either cars, if handling is what i'm after. hell... i would go pick up an audi or a lancer, throw 20k worth of suspension and engine mods and voila... you got yourself a track car. it may look like a POS, but it handles like mad right?

so in short... styling is #1.

Definately purchase the 030 package, you wont regret it at all. I think Juicee will agree with me completely. The suspension is tweaked 20% stiffer and with bigger brakes and factory LSD, it is worth the extra coin.

You would love it as I am certain with your help I could learn to drive the M5!
That would be a blast. It would be great to have both sleds in the garage but some of us can only afford one 100k plus vehicle

I go through two sets sometimes per week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! driving is addiction man. We are heading up likely around 6p for 7p-10p racing. There usually is many M3 and EVO's just not many M5, M6 but you can change that and become a master at the 1/4 mile. We just need to learn to launch her. To get back on topic,

The 63 handles purdy dam good. But really if you want a pure more sporty feel go with the M5, better yet get a Caymen!

Yes, I have to agree... The M5 handles better than the M6, and better than the CLS cars, (it just doesn't look as pretty, but you can't tell when you are inside driving) the seat bolsters are awesome, the i-drive sux but voice command is great. The HUD is great as well. After my 06 M5, I drove 7 other cars, trying to get that same feel is impossible... The CLS takes the prize for looks though. Every time I see one on the road, I am in awe...

Bringing this thread to life again. You HONESTLY think the CLS63 is the best handling car you have driven? Maybe it's just me, but you can definately feel the cars weight when you driving quickly around corners. It also feels somewhat artificial from the airmatic suspension. It seems mediocre at handling at best in my opinion.

He probably meant best for it's size and weight..... there are definitely many cars better designed for handling

Maybe an obvious question that you have already ruled out, but how about a C63? More room than an M3, smaller better handling than an E or CLS. I haven't driven a current M5, so I can't say how the C63 handles in comparison to the M5, but it is a relative bargain. While all cars can be performance tuned for $$$, the C63 has a great motor that is easily uncorked for a (relatively) few $.
