Your right, that's hillarious, they must be on crack. "The 550 is about $20,000 less and the 63 is no faster or quicker."

2007 CLS 550 and some other MBZ
Car and Driver did a test on the 550 and the numbers are pretty impressive.

Actually that IS rather impressive....
Here is a quote from the following article
To a certain extent, that’s what our numbers show. The CLS63 gets to 60 mph from rest in a blistering 4.1 seconds, a tenth quicker than the CLS55, but is identical otherwise up to 120 mph and shares a 12.6-second quarter-mile time.

C63S coupe, X5M
There 5-60mph time was 5.0sec, they likely got that mixed with the 0-60...

I have to agree to edmunds, juice. you paid 25k more for wearing a factory installed amg badge. you know you can get one on ebay for $25 bucks right?

........I don't think that the CLS550 is faster than CLS63, but the difference is not as wide as you might think. One open secret is the performance of the 550 engines. Nearly 400HP and 400LBFT of torque in a car that weighs less than the equivalent 63. An E550 for instance is faster than a W210 E55. Both are low 13sec 1/4 mile cars. The CLS63 is complicated to lunch with the car programmed to start in second gear. I can see the 550 and the 63 having pretty close 1/4 mile times, with the 63 being faster occassionally depending on what gear it launches from. My point is not to say that the 63 is slow, but more to say that the E550 and the CL550 are pretty fast. Someone should throw a blower on one of these and see.

A simple mistake by Edmunds, the CLS63 AMG is of course faster than the CLS550. This can be proven with even the most average drivers at the wheel of both cars.

the e/cls 550 are high 4 sec 0-60 cars, the 63's are low 4 sec cars
big difference
the 550's are fast as ****, they are as fast as my clk55 was, and can do 4.8 to 60, 4.7 is pushing it, but hten again c&d always has the fastest times
they got a 209 55 to 60 in 4.5

...........happy for you. Most 63's DO NOT start in 1st gear.
AMG_55, 0-60 times are gradually becomming obsolete. This is because as the HP wars result in creation of cars with HP in the stratosphere, traction from a dig dictates 0-60 times. For instance, the published 0-60 time for the SL65 is 4.2 secs. Of course the SL65 is not slower than the E63. Races run over a longer distance such as 1/4 mile are more useful. Sometimes to compensate for this, cars are run fr0m 5-60 instead of 0-60.

I think the gearing prefers the 0-60 times because in the 0-100km/h or other tests here in Europe there is no comparison.

any 63 car or even 55k car that does not committ to a race with a 550 will loose.
Example:
E550 or CLS550 at full WOT 100%
vs
Casual AMG driver at 75% throttle.. thinking that he can over take with 100hp and 70lbs of torque.
advantage : E550.
my point: the difference is not as large as it used to be. You stall from a dig or you give them .5 sec start and the AMG will have to work hard to reel the 550 back.
same applies with a BMW 550.

...........after a while all these numbers start getting confusing. In this instance, the Kompressor motor is a full 2secs faster from 0-200km/h than the 63. This is incredible because the 63 is supposed to do better at higher speeds because the kompressor motor is supposed to get heat soaked. So much for that.
