So the CLS63 is faster than the 55?
I keep hearing different things.
On MBUSA the CLS63 is 4.3 to 60 and the CLS55 is 4.5. I thought the CLS55 is faster at speeds below 100 mph?
I am more interested in lower-end quickness because I live in a city.

55 vs 63 Again !
After many long debates about E55 vs E63 (and same goes for CLS), here is my take on it.....
- From 0 to 50 mph, the 55 is faster.
- From 50 to 85 mph, both cars are about the same.
- From 85 and higher, the 63 pulls on the 55.
This has been tested on the track many times as well as on the streets, and the results have been very consistent. So in the end, it all comes down to the driver; it is definately a driver's race.
It is also a driver's choice; one car (the 55) is all about brute force down in the low rpm band with more aggressive shifting (jerky) and very sporty-like feel while the other car (the 63) has a more linear power delivery, wider-range power distribution (rpm goes up to 8000 rpm ), and stronger top end power delivery.

Both cars are very close in performance. Don't pay attention to Mercedes online numbers, they are simply a marketing tool. Of course, they will say the newer car is faster otherwise people would think they are going backwards. The CLS55 does 0 to 60 in about 4.3 to 4.4 seconds while the CLS63 does it in 4.4 to 4.5 seconds (again extremely close in performance).

This topic has been beat to death. But here's my $.02
I use a g-timer to test my times. Now for those that say that's just a toy, consider that at the most recent track day my g-timer was 100% of the time exactly in tune with the drag strip timer for the 1/4 mile. Now obviously that doesn't say anything about the 0-60 time but
anyway, using the g-timer the best time I ever got on a nice cold and dry day was 3.91 from 0-60. so 4.4 or 4.3 is reproduceable results but not necessarily the best. the 63 is very dependent on temp so on a hot day I think the 55 has the edge.

If you are worried about stoplight races, make sure to get the Limited Slip Differential (Performance Package). Although there is no specific data gathered, it has to be worth a lot out of the hole.

Also, at California Speedway, jangy raced gE63 a couple of times and even though jangy would get the jump, Greg's E63 pulled away around 80 mph and higher. Jangy has the whole thing on video. However jangy did have his intake tubes pulled out, but still performed very consistently.
On the street, I've raced at least 8 or 9 E55s and only lost to 1 so far
Again, I'm not trying to start any wars here, as I truely belive both cars are so close in performance. I'm just stating what happend on my last 5 visits to the track (3 times at Famoso and 2 times at California Speedway). I am also going to Sacramento this Saturday 12/08/2007 and will definately report back the results, but I am confident they will be the same.

Lotus Elise SLK55
C'mon guys. Real AMG enthusiasts know better than to compare 0-60 times. 0-60 is pretty much meaningless in the real world and is 100% determent by traction and launch technique. One guy can get 4.8 seconds one day and a different guy can get 4.1 seconds on another day with the same car. There is no one "official" 0-60 time, it varies depending on a variety of conditions.
I have beaten 55's, corvette's and vipers with my stock 190hp 1.8L inline 4 Elise (before I turbocharged it) from a standstill to like 40-50mph because that car had R-compunds and mid-engined layout and you can launch it like crazy w/ WOT 7K RPM's, traction disabled, and without any wheelspin whatsoever. Try doing that in an E55 and you'll stay in one place burning rubber (unless you're on radials or slicks of course). Moral of the story: forget about 0-60 and concentrate on 0-100, 30-150, 1/4 mile E/T's and trap speeds.

I agree with Addicted2Speed. It doesn't really matter what the best of each car can do, as it depends on so many factors and conditions. Sure the 63 can get to 0-60 in 4 seconds, but so can the 55 if conditions were right.
I was just stating "average" numbers in general.
Both cars are extremely close in performance, and it is just a matter of preference which car one goes with.
