'06 CLS 55AMG ... what is the standard audio system???
I believe it's Harmon Kardon ... IMO it sounded pretty wimpy compared to my 17 year old SClass Bose system.
Is the stock stereo any good in these cars?
It has the CD Changer and what they refered to as the standard radio.
How does a car with a $104K price tag get fitted with a substandard stereo?

I placed an Infiniti sub in the trunk with an amp. Improved the sound some but still substandard
Blah Blah Blah...
Or so the excuse...
I've read the units are all fiber optic and the control units (located in the trunk) can be replaced fairly easily. The dash control interface still being the same, but thus upgraded.
Is this true?
Does the standard radio have subs in the rear deck or are they just full range?
The easiest fix would be to replace the 4 door speakers and add an amp. You can get a signal for the amp from the AGW located in the trunk.
If you are looking for even better sound then you need some type of sound processor to fix the doctored signal comming from the AGW. JL cleansweep, rockford 360, or alpine pxe-h650 can be used to correct the signal so you can feed that to the amp instead of going direct from the AGW to your amp.
All 3 of these units require you to control the volume with a seperate knob and you should no longer use the regular radio volume knob. Alot of people just max this secondary knob out and then continue to use thier regular radio volume knob.

The cls one is ok & is better when you have qulity sound files, but it does make you feel you need more... AMG performance studio has an upgrade to the sound system... not sure you can get it in the USA

I don't think this car has a DVD player?

To tell the truth ... I don't know much at all about the "Standard Radio" in the CLS.
I know the radio in my Porsche smokes it.
I know the radio in the Lincoln MKX smokes it.
I know the radio in my '92 SClass smokes it.
Hell ... I know the radio in my F250 smokes it.
Right now I'm hoping there's an easy upgrade path that's not going to look aftermarket.

IMO there's no reason the radio in this car shouldn't be far superior to all the above.

I noticed the system reacts differntly to radio and for exmaple Ipod high qulity sound tracks and also DvD trfilms, or trakcs..thats where it shines.
seach fir ipod on here it you will come across a code install by a member on this board (kevin m)
I don't know what the differences are between the two versions, but perhaps you should find that out and then try to do a factory upgrade instead of looking into aftermarket products. replacing the head unit would be futile since many things seem to be controlled from there..
Compact discs sound MUCH better. In the realm of acceptable for now.
My question is ... there appears to be a 8-10" low profile sub in the trunk. But it doesn't put out much. It's simply not balanced to the rest of the system correctly.
Is their a way to access the sub besides simply the generic BASS and Treble offered to tailor sound? Which just increases bass to all the speakers in that range.
It would help a ton to be able to tailor the system a little better.
Thanks!
