White exhaust smoke. Engine dead (CLS63)

Hi Guys

Had a scary moment yesterday entering the garage. My 2007 CLS63 started stuttering and a thick white smoke poured out of the exhaust. Check engine light went on and 5 seconds later it died.

Mercedes is picking it up later today but obviously I am worried that this is something serious. Did anyone experience something similar? Any idea of what I might be facing?

Thanks

Ken

That sounds like a blown head gasket (or worse head damage) to me.

I've never experienced it with a Mercedes, but have with other cars.

The smoke was coolant being turned to steam and obviously that's gonna kill the engine if theirs enough pouring in.

I'm betting you're going to get a new engine.

What were you doing before it happened?

I was heading home from work and spent about 30 minutes in slow moving traffic. Just before reaching the garage traffic opened up and I booted it to around 70 mph.

No check engine lights or any other symptoms prior to the shut down. 5 seconds engine rumble and really thick white toxic smelling smoke.

Car has 20.000 miles on it and never had any issues before.

A potentially blown head gasket and engine replacement sure doesn't sound promising

If it was ... call it a good thing it failed under warranty. On that new of a car, it was a defect and accident waiting to happen. Sounds like it was so bad it hydrolocked the engine.

Could have been a bad head (Not flat or defective) a bad gasket, or simply improper installation.

At least you made it home.

Anyway, if I were a betting man, I'd bet on that as the most likely problem.

From there it's cracked/warped heads and worse.

Did you overheat? Is the oil mucked up/diluted?

What was the outcome? Failed head bolt?

Wow... blast from the past. One (or more) of the injectors failed and were shooting excessive petrol into the engine and all the way out through the exhaust. At least this is what the AMG tech told me (I'm not technical enough to challenge this assumption)

Car drove fine after the injectors were replaced and I sold it roughly 2 years ago. Replaced with a C63 which was replaced with a 2012 E63 5 months ago.

Always a good thing to have that happen when under warranty.
