On the CLS gains are a bit different.
The CLS, E, SL, CL are about 20 to 30whp and 20 to 25wtq

Dont you agree that the difference was more than just detuning the C's motor.
The new "performance package plus" includes changing the pistons, camshaft, connecting rods and software. After these changes it still 487 hp and not 518 like the E63, SL63 (-31).
Its safe to assume if AMG replaced these it was with the purpose of maintaining reliability with the higher power motor.
In these economic times no one's throwing money around, especially car companies.

Thanks to the the forged pistons adopted from the new SLS AMG super sports car together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, the engine is also three kilograms lighter than before. This V8 is fitted with variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey and has updated engine management software.
