My CLS 55 randomly switched off...Any ideads???
Started my car aound 1pm and reversed it out of my drive.... did not hear any out of place noises
Drove about 100 yards up my road and the car just randomly switched off with no warning lights on the dash

I put it back into P and started it again.... stated fine but as soon as i put it into D and let go of the brake it switched off again. Repeated the process again and it done the same thing. It was only the 3rd time that it ran ok
Again no error messages on the screen and its not missfiring or overheating. Its got 50k miles on the clock,im the 2nd owner and the 1st owner was around 50 years old so i doubt it has been driven hard
Anyway drove it a bit hard for a while to see what happens.... but everything is normal. Plus drove it again this morning and everything was normal.
Sorry about going on and on but any ideas about what the problem could be?
Do i need to be looking for signs that the head gasket is gone or going?
Any suggestions would be geatly appreciated
thanks chaps
1. Did it cut off clean, no sputtering etc.?
2. Did it bow out white smoke from the exhaust?
3. Did the dash idiot lights go on/off several times quickly?
4. Do you have the engine lite on?
5. Are your battery terminals corroded?
6. Do you still have the original battery for the engine?
7. Do you still have the original standby battery?
8. Did it rain recently?
9. Did you park it on a hill or slight incline?
2) cant say i noticed any white smoke
3 + 4) Not warning lights of any sort
5) will check the battery terminals
6) Yes,it is the original battery for the engine
7) Not sure about the standby battery (where is it located?)
8) Nornamlly raining...but nothing for 4 days
9) Park car on very very slight decline
I forgot to mention before that normally when i start the car i have a message dispaly 'battery protection' convenience options temperiorly unavilable' but this goes away after the 1st minute of driving when it then reads 'covvenience options available again' I have always put this down to ICE install and the snooper/jammer that was installed by previous pwner

Is it as simple as taking the old one out and replacing it with a new one or is it more tech than that?
