CLS55 Reliability? Sell or wait 12-18 months for 2012 63
I have an 05 CLS55. I'm happy with the car and can't think of another 4 door that I'd replace it with except for the 2012 CLS63 which won't come out here in OZ for another 12-18 months I'd say.
My concern is that the car is now out of warranty and any potential issues will probably be costly. Opinions on whether I should just keep it for another 18 months or buy something in between.

I'd keep the current car if it as all the options you like. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the new car based on the pics I've seen. Plus, with these cars it makes no sense to buy new when a used one with low miles can traditionally be found for half off about 3 years down the road (saving about $50k).

I'm in Australia and it was released here in 2005.
Thanks to wasupdu for your thoughts.
Interesting to note everyone's BS meter is on high alert though.

CLS55 plus a few Ducati's
Australia and New Zealand OFTEN get new consumer product well before the rest of the world.... from womans fragrance, to sporting products, to motorcycles and cars.... Just because you're in the US doesn't mean you are a priority!
And as far as the original request goes, I would keep the car you have. It is better looking..... change in a few years when the new model becomes available second hand if you have to change.... let someone else take the big hit when they drive it off the showroom floor.... the money you save here alone would be greater than average repairs or maintenance of your '05 over the next few years.

I know the smart thing to do is hold on to my car until the new CLS comes out. But since the warranty has expired, it has made me think of possible issues with the car which may become costly. 2 things spring to mind that have needed repair in the past 3 years I've had the car : front left shock failed that led to damage to most of the suspension assembly - AU$12,000 and the Command stopped working needing replacement - AU$8,000. Luckily these were fixed under warranty.
The facts are car is 5 years old with 70,000kms (~43,500 miles). Have you guys heard of any issues with older CLS'? Are these cars made to last?

First customer cars arrived in the second week of february 2005. I know because my neighbour got his car then
//// oh and BTW keep the car. Engine and tranny are rock solid. Just make sure you change engine oil every 6000-8000 miles and transmission oil every 20000 miles and youll be ok. Airmatic suspension less good IMO, but you can buy refurbished
shocks from arnott industries and they are really good. My Command also failed under warranty, but you can get them from ebay for less than a 1000$.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Have MB released a date for the release of the CLS63? The local dealers can't give me a clear answer. The best estimate is 6 months after the base CLS which is released here mid 2011.

Im in the same situation as the OP. My warranty runs out in 6 months and I do NOT want to own this car without some kind of warrenty. I may have to sell it, buy some beater, and then wait till I buy the new CLS.
