HELLO! help! Thinking of 06 CLS 55 or e60 m5 to BUY!!
HI all! Dan and I'm new here to this forum! I'm from Socal, Los Angeles! ! I'm a japanese import kinda guy, I had a built 94 APU supra, built up EVO 8 gsr, and now I'm rolling in a 335i dinan 2! Ready to make a switch in the future to possibly AMG or M series!
I love love love the engineering in AMG motors, more so than in the M. To me, a wonderfully built engine is like a smart brain in a really pretty girl!
1. Anyways, I've done some reading up and these CLS55 AMGS seem to be pretty good cars, as they have the m113k motor same as in the E55!
-intercooler pump, injectors, possible valve cover gaskets and fluid flushes will be on my FIRST to do list if I pick up the CLS! ( Preventative Maint in my mind)
- I am worried about the open deck design of the motor, strong enough to withold 500hp and 600tq Daily for 6 years??
-Transmission is pretty golden! extremely reliable, however a couple people have had problems with them and replaced???? why???
2. E60 m5, I love the V10, however,
-the VANOS oil pump seems to be extremely faulty, and lack of oil getting to the bearings seems to destroy them!!!
-The engine is known to be poorly engineered to some! This is not an engine that seems easy to rebuild. ALSO, SMG is a NO go, will ONLY BE A 6mt if i choose this route! I hate the fact that theres are so many plastics going on in the engine bay, Don't like the fact there are plastic intake manifolds!
What are your thoughts on the two cars? I would be Picking either up with 30k miles, and driven until about 95k miles , a DAILY as well!
I will also be doing some modding!!
ANY technical/ Mechanical inputs GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Just sold my E60 M5 bought a CLS55. Let me give you the simple answer.
Forget M5.
Get the CLS55.
M5 has no torque, uses more fuel/oil than a Saturn V Rocket, sounds good, doesn't look as good, SMG is just annoying and extremely expensive when it fks up and it does fk up, not a question of if but when.
ClS55 has the torque, is faster, looks better, better fuel consumption somewhat, has a timeless shape/look, drive and feel is so much better.

Almost pulled the trigger on a M5 myself.
Since your looking at early cls55 i'll assume that your looking for early m5's, if so...
Stay away from them they are extremely expensive to maintain. Oil alone is $200, it requires a special blend of Castrol that is hard to find.
If I'm not mistaken the M5 also needs a valve adjustment every few 1000 miles.
The car doesn't like heat.
iDrive sucks, but command is not much better.
Only argument I see in favor of the M5 is the fact it has a V10, due to cafe standards there will never be an "affordable V10". As enthusiast I will probably never have an opportunity or the money to own a V10 ever again.

Okay, SO lets say I purchase an 06 with about 30k miles and get the following:
-Thorough PPI and clean carfax comes back, ALL seems well
-Few grand budget for Prevnt. Maintenance (IC pump, HE, Injectors, Gaskets)
, Fluid flushes
Do i still need a WARRANTY?
It's getting costly for a warranty, 6k and up on these AMG vehicles that are about 6 years old. There are many many w211 e55 owners with no warrantys running stronger than ever with about 100k+ miles running 11's 1/4 mile.
Will my Preventative Maint. be enough?
Spending 6k on warranty + Prevent maintenance will be about 10k plus dollars AFTER initial purchase on car? Might as well get the c63 or something lol

Major expenses on a CLS55 will be front air struts and the brakes at 50-60k miles. I did all this in 2012, total cost was about $4k.
You can save money by using Arnott air struts, they are about $400 ea (about half the OEM part) with the discount code, and they are at least as good with a lifetime warranty. Dealer charged about $400-500 to install each one - right cost more than left, more labor apparently involved - but a private shop would be less.
CLS55 brakes are expensive to replace, even more so if you get one that has the P30 package.

Thanks guys for some of the replys! Yes, i was definitely aware of the air struts going bad, as they are a prevalent issue on the w211 e55 as well!
RENNTECH55k i take it you dont have a warranty? How has the car been treating you so far?? How's it holding up in Arizona weather?

Car is absolutely amazing and has held up beautifully. No I didn't get the M-B or other extended warranty, mostly because I figured most the costly repairs would not be honored since I have installed a lot of aftermarket parts they could blame for failure... lowering module for suspension parts, Renntech Stage 5 PP for engine/tranny, Euro COMAND for electrical, etc.
Only other things I've had to deal with are usual wear and tear items, like tires and batteries. I had some other issues that were fixed under warranty with no hassle by the dealer, including an entire new gas tank!
I have kept the car garaged and also have covered parking at work. I have also pampered it, never had anything other than a hand wash. The paint has help up beautifully, no swirls or faded areas, it looks like the day I got it. Whitish leather inside (Designo package) has also held up very well, 99% of the marks come up easily with leather cleaner. Honestly I think it is easier to keep light leather clean as you can see marks on it right away, then take care of them.

MBWorld Fanatic!
I have warranty on my cls which I'm thinking of extending it if I decide to keep it. I haven't had any problems besides wear and tear products.

Which warranty company are you thinking of? If you have factory warranty, I guess it will only last until 2013 at the most.

Plus can we even compare the looks on the CLS to the boxy E60?, the First generation CLS is a classic.
