thumping noise on 2006 CLS 55

This weird thumping noise started coming from rear of car recently. Speeds up as car speeds up. Shop said not trie or wheel.Seems to be rear end or axle? Strange thing is it does it when car is cold and at low speeds. Don't really hear it after driving a while. I have Quaife LSD that was installed like 8 months ago. car runs great has about 35,000 miles. It is putting out around 650 HP at crank. Any ideas or anyone experienced this and know what it is? Shop that installed LSD is looking at it nut no diagnosis yet.

Called Quaiif and they said not the diff if it does it going straight as nothing is moving in It except when cornering. It's really strange it does it when cold going straight. You can also make it do it when warned up but only if load one side by turning. Shop going to pull axle and start looking around. Not sure what else to do.

check your driveshaft support bearing. Mine is going out and will make a clicking/thumping noise only at low speeds. Parts cost about 130 but you have to drop the whole driveshaft to fix though, so if you arent mechnically inclined it could cost you in labor.

Check for cracking or rips in the rubber surround, that will give you a good idea.

If you can make it happen by cornering and the sound is consistent even when straight I'd look to the diff installation. It's not whining which would rule out improper clearance between ring and pinion but the bumps indicate something rough rubbing consistently.

It appears it is the diff according to the tech he says he's sure. He said he can make it do it consistently by applying brake when on lift to load one side or by cornering slow. Does it going straight only when cold.

They changed fluid and it was dark and silver metallic when stirred. Was Redline 75/140 since installed.

I would not recommend Quaife at all. Very hard to reach on phone. Warranty only applies to original owner so putting stock one back on so can send this off to get fixed. Cost me lot of time and money and good luck even getting them on phone!

Post pics of the old one. Once it is out you may be able to tell if it was an install error or product failure.

I will post pics. I don't think it was install error. This shop specializes in German cars and do good work. Also it never made any noise howling or whining like they typically would if gears were not installed correctly.

Will know soon enough because Quaife will inspect thoroughly and determine what caused failure and if they will warranty.

Yikes! This makes me reconsider whether or not I want to install a Quaife in my car now. Hope it all works out for the best.

Sent it back to Quaife. They will have today so I will follow up shortly. The ring and pinion looked ok so don't see how this can be install related.

The Wavetrac is the one I should have got and their lifetime warranty is transferable unlike Quaifes original owner only policy.

on the wavetrac unit you will have to set the backlash which can be tricky

I believe you have to set backlash any time you replace your diff and line the gears up?

I had reputable shop do mine. Don't have the tools or know how to set backlash properly.
