Smile Questions about 219 and 218

I have been eyeballing the CLS for some time now and the one thing that struck me was that the lines on the 2006-2010 model seem to be a bit more attractive than the 2011 to now model. Especially the hood in the former isn't broken up with a cut line right across the front.

Does the 219 have much more benifit in build quality that i should forgo the 218?

Also what is the difference between the CLS 55 and CLs 63? I'm assuming it's engine but my question is which engine is better.

If you can afford to get the new model CLS, then I suggest you purchase that instead. I love my W219 CLS55, but it's always better to purchase the newer model if possible. A friend of mine has a 2013 CLS63 and he tuned it and it's nothing short of amazing.

The major difference between the W219 CLS55 and the W219 CLS63 is engines. The W219 CLS55 has a supercharged 5.4L engine that produces around 470 horsepower and 510+ lbs of torque. The W219 CLS63 has a naturally aspirated 6.3L engine and does not produce as much torque as the supercharged CLS55, but has slightly more horsepower. The CLS55 engine is much more mod friendly and has much greater potential than the W219 CLS63 NA engine. If you are going to purchase a W219, I would suggest you purchase the CLS55 over the CLS63 (unless the CLS63 is a 2009, but I'm still partial to the 55K engines - they're fantastic.)

The new 2011+ CLS63's, are different than the aforementioned CLS' above. Mercedes-Benz went back to a 5.4L engine after 3 years of producing the CLS with a naturally aspirated 6.3L engine because it had unsatisfactory MPG for even an AMG, among other issues. The new CLS AMG's utilize a twin turbo 5.4L engine that have mindblowing amounts of torque and horsepower. Of course with a twin turbo, you will have slight turbo lag, but all the while, it is definitely worth it.

I hope this helps!

I must agree. I have an 06 cls55 amg and an 02 ml55. Same engine and trans both of which are 5 speed auto but the CLS is supercharged and the ml isn't. Be ready to be driven nuts by little CLS things like switches that stop and need changing finding dip sticks for your engine and trans ( unless you're gonna have a dealer do it) and the like. But that car can make even the crappiest day turn good just getting in and hitting the key!

It depends. Both cars are great. When the new one came out, I did not like it and thought the older one looked better. Then at times, I like the new one more than the "dated" old one. Regardless, both cars are great. And of course, the two pictures you posted, both look amazing.

Just because of the simple fact that it is the last rendering of the W219 model, and any and all issues found in both the 06 CLS55 and the 07 and 08 CLS63's would have been resolved by then by Mercedes (at least I'd like to think so). Also, the 09 CLS63, despite having the 6.3 NA engine, has a better resale value than the aforementioned W219 models.
