modifications under warranty

first post here but have been lurking around for several months. well, i decided to look for a new car (currently a 2002 bmw 330ci) and have decided to more than likely purchase an 06 c55. the question that i have is, what, if any, modifications can be done to a MB that will still be covered under warranty? i'm looking for more power, perhaps an adjustable suspension, a more aggressive "growl" (think flowmasters on a camaro or firebird but not as loud) and audio/visual mods. any help would further help me with my future purchase. thanks in advance.

p.s. also, if there is a way to remove the limiter

all the rules from BMW applies to MB when it comes to mods. you mod it you void the warranty.

if you want more growl from the exhaust just remove the resonator.

only way to remove limiter is to chip it. again it's like bmw you should know.

Yeah, that does sound like a steal! Especially if he has mods on top of it which one post indicated.

Certain mods don't void the warranty, and honestly no mods will void the entire warranty, just the warranty on that part. If after catastrophic failure of an oem part, you wish for it to be covered under warranty, and they claim that it is not covered because you modified the vehicle, they have to prove in court that the part you put on the car caused the failure. Causation is nearly impossible to prove, so they are pretty much screwed. This is called the magnusson-moss act and was designed to keep manufacturers from forcing their customers to by their original replacement parts. Companies try to warn that the whole warranty will be voided, but this is illegal as is voiding your powertrain warranty. This is true for any vehicle sold as new (or bought from someone used who bought it new in this country) in the united states regardless of country of origin of manufacture.

As to things that tend to **** dealers off less (if you are the non-confrontational type):

Renntech Airbox, Renntech ECU (software flash so is virtually invisible to the tech and upon inspecting the printed circuit board will look the same), Renntech or Kleemann headers, Kleemann full exhaust from headers to tips. Renntech, Kleemann, Bilstein, coilover suspension setups.

The only rule if you lease a vehicle is that modifications have to be returnable to stock. This is further confirmation that, on the whole, manufacturers have little power over this kind of thing. If a part does blow up your car, then they shouldn't have to pay, and neither should you, you should take it up with the part's manufacturer. To void your warranty though is silly and illegal.

Some companies, the only one for MB I know is kleemann, offer supplementary warranties with their products that cover the whole modified car. Renntech backs up their product by saying they will pay for any damage to parts affected by their parts being installed by a proper ASE certified mechanic. You take this on faith though, but it is a free guarantee. The kleemann one has a nominal policy fee.

Things that tend to **** off dealers more:

forced induction, messing with engine internals of any kind, disconnecting safety equipment, using alternate fuels such as NOS, methanol, etc...

That's about it, the rest most dealers are okay with, especially if you buy cars from them regularly. A few dealers go so far as to install aftermarket products themselves. I know that at Keyes European you can be new brabus cars off the showroom floor. Others are registered Renntech dealers.

Interesting info there rguy. Thanks!

I'd like to know if anyone has had a bad experience with either Renntech or Kleemann not covering their parts in a mishap? I'm just wondering if it becomes finger pointing when something goes wrong. "This problem isn't from our modifications, you need to take it up with your dealer." Or..."No, this is definitely a result of the mods, you need to take it up with them." and so on?

for the warranty, it is really up to dealer to dealer, some are mod friendly, some are not.

I'll keep you posted. I know that Bob at Renntech was not happy to hear that I've added a 125 shot of NOS to my already S/C car. (he would have been happier with the headers instead. 35-40 hp vs 125 hp...????)

Not that I'm expecting any problems

Why not add both for 165 hp? I know the NOS was cheaper and adds more power, but the headers are power you'll have all the time not something that you have to turn off and on and refill when it gets low.
