It is pretty crazy. :p
For your information, we do not have the opened personalized number plate implemented yet. So, the transport department will only issue number in the straight sequence since must be 50+ years ago.
1-9999
AA1-MBnnnn (current prefix is MB )
People are allowed to 'apply' for his desired number (thosw not yet allocated)starting with a small fee HK$1000. If the picked number is available, it will go to the auction starting with a value HK$1000. So, it means , even the number is picked by you, you still need to bid in the opened auction. These can go up over HK$20000+. Non special numbers are transferrable, so people can make profit from buy and sell.
The "Special Numbers" do not start in value of $1000. It starts with a value
decided at the time of the auction opened. The one I picked is following into "Special Numbers". e.g. MB55, MB555, MB5555, MB5500, MB5050 are special numbers; whereas MB155, MB955 are not special numbers.
Special numbers are not allowed to transfer to other parties, so it must be used by the buyer.
Believe or not, yesterday, the number 3230 with no prefix, was with a starting value HK$200,000. And, it was sold. Pronounced in Chinese , '3230' sounds like 'business come easy' !
'MB55' starting value was only HK$9000; and I fought with a crazy guy for that and I would let go at $26000 ; and surprise he backout at HK$26000.
So I had to buy it (fuccccccck) :p
Anyway, it will being luck
Will show you photo 2 weeks later.
thanks

And, what I discovered, MB55 was the first and the only MB prefix number that had been included in last weekend's auction. ( I did write a letter to request it only ~6 weeks back ). This number was being called out at almost the last session of the auction (over 100+ numbers); that makes me believe that, other MB prefix numbers did not get included in this auction because of priority matter (the current registration number issuance is prefixed MB , so very new). Most likely, there will be lots of MB prefix numbers in next auction as you know better than me how many MB cars in HK want a MB prefix lucky number. I really see I had the honor of being the first one to win a MB prefix number in an auction - that is 'luck' already. Aren't we all AMG owners want to win one way or another ? That also makes me believe, I had had a few competitiors or otherwise, I would not get it for this price as all the rich 55 owners could be after it! The money is nothing to some of them, as a CLS55 is priced US210K+ , or a SL55 is US270K here.
************************************************** ******
Since it is not transferrable. I will consider to release it back to the auction pool if anyone is willing to pay me HK$52000 in cash. :p

you will need to pay those guys..but you end up saving moree

You reminded me , I am no expert , and I did notice many 'professionals' there ; most of them are picking cheap transferrable number plates. Some of them were biding the special numbers for others. You are right, they must be hired to do it. At the time, my competitor ( hope he was readin this and wish will accept my apologises ) was actually shooting his price jumping from 20000 to 25000 as his last call. And I hesitated and was going to give up ; so I just made a casual call to 26000 - and was lucky that he did not know that was my also my 'last call' . And, I was surprised he had passed.
Anyway, the opening price was 9000/11000 something, so it was not a 'cheap deal' and you know it could be worse.

but i don't know what is more worth it, b/c i always see high end cars with AA and ##. is it worth more to have less numbers in the plate?
my dad got lucky 20 years ago and got 2 plates with ** 1008. many people asked him if he wanted to sell but he said no

Usually , less numbers worth more, single digit (with prefix of course) can start at HK$300K already. And, you know better than me, single digit without prefix are for Taipans only as these costs over million dollars. Normally, the money is for charity.
See below how many MB's in next auction:-

not really sure about the ins and outs of how it works, but from what i know, numbers 'sound' like words in chinese. therefore, superstitious people love numbers like 6,8 but hate 4(sounds like death).
