Just picked up a GT2 today. Works great out of the box using standard settings. Right now, I'm looking for some of the key data to tune the GT2 for the E55 (for example, the CDA spec).

Passport G Timer - Initial Impressions

Here is a link to the products: http://www.escortradar.com/gtimer.htm

I purchased the GT2 for $179.99 at a local retailer. I did not shop around.

First impressions:

1) Great build quality, much like Passports higher end Radar Detectors
2) Easy/No-brainer install (plugs into lighter, calibrates itself, etc.).
3) Intuitive menu....do not need to read manual to get going, but did anyway to learn all of the details and tricks
4) Don't know about true accuracy (Passport claims to be accurate within +/- 100 milliseconds using default config, +/- 50 milliseconds using custom config). For clarity, I'm not saying the unit is not accurate, I just don't know for sure other than what the manufacturer claims.
5) Regardless of actual accuracy, the unit appears very consistent in what it measures. As a result, I think it will help drivers monitor performance tuning results, as well as, how to drive their cars (ie, best launch parameters). This is a very big deal for me and why my first impressions are so high.

What did I learn so far:

Keeping my '06 E55 in Sport Mode, ESP ON, and letting it shift on its own is hard to CONSISTENTLY improve on (atleast with stock tires). That "lunge" we are all familiar with (as the ESP torque management kicks in) is no where near as bad as excessive tire spin with ESP OFF or in DYNO Mode....the numbers prove it.

Good luck. Its a great toy to have in the glove box.

For people who want something like this and haven't yet sprung for it, you should read the Car and Driver article that tested seven under $1000 devices that do this, including the Passport GT2. Their winner for best accuracy and features versus cost: the Tesla Electronics G-tech/Pro RR, $300.

I had the original Gtech and man that thing was pretty accurate to a tenth. That's measuring 1/4 mile time to the lights and trap speed I didn't bother looking. These things are close enough but if I was to buy again it would be the new Gtech model like the one they tested in Car and Driver.
