Where to have satellite antenna installed?

My dealer says that Mercedes only recommends that the Sirius satellite radio antenna be installed in the middle of the trunk deck (drilling a small hole in it). AAAGGGHHH!!!! Don't think I want to do that.

The salesman says he has put them on the rear window deck inside the car with only minor drop in reception. That way you don't really see it.

What do you all think? Where do you have them installed and are you happy with it?

Although I paid for the satellite option and took delivery from stock Sept 1st, Mercedes still can't provide all the parts for installation, saying they have temporarily diverted all units to the factory for order installs due to heavier than anticipated demand. Sounds part feasible, part BS. Why wouldn't they want to keep me happy too? I actually made selling a car easier by taking one off a lot.

Under the vent on the hood. No loss except when sitting right by a semi truck.

Not a bad idea. I'll see if they will do that for me. Really do not want them to drill a hole in my trunk lid and mount that thing there. Would be annoying and distracting and make polishing the trunk that much harder.

Thanks for the info.

You might need to get a new antenna to mount where I did. I believe the factory one is way to big to get in there. Mine antenna is in there with not alot of room to spare. You should be able to pick up a small one pretty cheap.

PLEASE....anywhere BUT the trunk lid. OMG is that hideous. I cringe when I see a MB with the antenna mounted like that.

I usually use a Terk mini antenna with splitter and mount it right at the rear of the "hat shelf" just inside the rear window. Putting it under the hood is just a little to much cable routing for my tastes.

You can put the magnetic antenna in the center of the dash against the glass. The small size antenna is hardly noticable, the reception is great, and the magnet sticks right to the speaker grate. It also makes for a really simple install, since you don't have to run a wire in from out side.

I used the mercedes benz antenna, but I mounted it myself underneath the rear parcel shelf between the speakers. You can access this area without removing anything, just open your trunk and stick your head in there, then look up. There are openings small enough to slide the antenna in. I just taped up the antenna and re-routed the wire provided behind the carpeting of the trunk lid. I get perfect reception everywhere.

So the antenna is mounted under the "hat shelf"? Not visible at all?
