Higher milage C32 - Opinions

Ok well I have a guy who is in Alabama who will most likley buy my Z so I have been hunting a C32. I have one in particular that is nice and the price is rite. It has high miles though, at 86k I would call it high. It is loaded and even has nav and they want like 23 for it. The paint is nice on it, but merc silver usually lasts for ever anyway. I am kinda worried about the engine though. I know the compression is low, but its blown, which can be hard. I have been on this site for some time now and the trans seems to be a hot spot. Whats the highest milage c32 on this site? What problems can I expect. I am going to drive it tomorrow and see how it feels, I think i will pull up in my dads SL500 so he will assume I have money and not mind if stomp on the gass a bit. Usually when a 22yr old goes to test drive they talk down, but not if you pull up in a nicer car than what you are going to be testing.
My biggest concern now is that I sell the Z, there is a C out there for me, just sucks that I may find "the one" before the Z is gone.

Quite possibly yours. Most that I see around here are under 50,xxx miles and a lot of them are under 30,xxx. I would make sure that you have some sort of extended warranty or that purchase price may not seem so great 6 months from now. I've seeb a few available in the high $20's with some warranty but the really low mile cars are still well over $30k. Just remember a transmission by itself could be $7-10 g's! Good luck with the search.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I am kinda worried about the engine though. I know the compression is low, but its blown, which can be hard."??

A board user who goes by the name Jon Winer has a 2002 C32 which he uses for regualr road racing sessions and he has around 120k. He has had some items break but all cars need some love as they age.

Things like intercoolers, compressors, suspension parts, etc will need to be replaced. The compressor seems to last about 100k miles then they either start to become very loud or crack.

The trans of these cars can take some real abuse and they are built to hold well more than the stock tq levels.

86k is young but it wont be a flawless car. Every car needs some work as it ages.

But dont forget that if you perform the work the car needs, when it needs it, it will run flawlessly for 200k miles easily.

Superchargers are also known as blowers. A "blown" motor is a motor that has a supercharger. I understand that a blown motor can also refer to like a blown head or a broken engine, but thats not what I ment. The lower compression is bc I think the compression is 8:1 (it may be 9, i am not 100 precent sure), but compaired to my Z that has 11:1 compression, thats really low. That means that there is less stress on the engine overall. Its like running a marathon at 8mph constantly instead of 11mph constantly, you are more likley to get hurt going faster. -bad example, but it works for me

Its nice to see one at 120K miles. I do not drive crazy and am more of a speed when I need it guy. I think the car can last, but yes I will get an aftermarket warranty for sure. There is one here in texas that is 1,200 for 4 years and like 48,000 miles over the 4 years. I really plan to leave the car stock, so I hopefully it will hold up.

depends how you treat and drive the C32.. and how well of a connection you have with a MB mechanic or dealer.

if you plan to have a high milage c32, I would do it for the right price and just make sure you dump it after 1 or 2 years.

After 100k, I would not trust it.

Aftermarket warranties are not all alike!!! Make sure that they cover the following items:

No shop rate limit....If your shop charges $100/hr and they have a $75 limit, you pay the diff.

Diagnostic time.....A lot will pay for the part but not the time to find out which part is needed.

Emissions....A lot of them do not cover this.

Stereo/NAV....Most so not cover these items

Car rental.....A lot of them will cover $35/day but will limit the amount

Prices can range a huge amount so be careful and make sure the warranty is backed by a solid underwriter. A buddy of mine bought a warranty for a 2002 M5 only to find out that the underwriter went belly up the first time he tried to use it! $2800 down the drain!

Thanks for the tip, thats handy. My buddy has a 100dollar deductable and that works well. I never thought about the 100dollar an hour and them only going up to 75 dollars. The dealership by my house I think charges like 85 an hour, so thats defonatly something to consiter. Thanks again.

I just crossed 90k miles driving to the shop last Saturday.. alternator went out but it was covered under the warranty. I bought the car with about 86k miles back in November. So far its been to the shop a few times, but I still love the car.. we will see how I feel after the next 10k miles..
