It's being reduced to 0% in steps starting this year, I think. I remember reading that the final year was 2004 or 2005. www.auto.com should have an archived article for it.

I know that luxury tax is reducing but not sure about gas guzzler?
I called 1 MB dealership and they said they discontinued the gas guzzler tax. Meanwhile, I called this other MB dealership that has the C32 and they're charging me the gas guzzler. Anyone know which is correct?

C32 AMG Gas Guzzler Tax
I checked the next twenty C32's, most of which have P.O. #'s slated for production next year, and all MSRP lists show the $1K Fed. Gas Guzzler Tax. I have not heard of it being eliminated but I will check my sources.
Could you be confusing it with the Federal Luxury Tax which is dropping again on 1 Jan. to 3% for sales over $40K? ...RAB

Is this just for C32's, or is this for other Mercedes such as the CLK 55?

luxury tax should decrease 1% for next year but...
Another question is did your MB dealer put this cost into the price of the car or did they add it to the out-the-door price?
The dealership that I talked to is adding this tax to the price of the car and then taxing it on top. Is this correct? I thought it's a 'gas guzzler TAX' which should should be excluded from the price of the car, correct?

Hey Adam,
I agree with you that luxury tax expires 2002 but I just wanted to confirm whether the 'gas guzzler tax' was terminated or not. Reason I ask is because I'm getting mix answers from various MB dealerships.
Let's say it wasn't terminated...was this tax added to your car purchase price (car + options) and then sales tax + lux tax + reg fees + docs + tire fee?
I was told by one 1 MB dealership that this is the case with CL's and C32's. Is this correct also?

The MBUSA build your own site shows that the luxury tax and gas guzzler tax are part of the total price. They should be subtracted to calculate sales tax. They are not buying good or services, they are federal taxes and not subject to sales taxes.

Federal Luxury Tax is not factored into state sales tax. In California, Federal Gas Guzzler Tax is part of the dealer invoice cost and IS factored in state sales tax. ...RAB

Gas guzzler still there
I picked up my car last week and it had the gas guzzler tax included.. infact it was on the window sticker for the car. Im sure if the C32 has it then any other AMG model would have it as well. I havent heard of any rumors of that going away. I thought it was a fed thing that was determined by the amount of fuel a vehicle burns. High performance vehicles always get hit with this.
