Which is faster? I have a buddy who has a 2000 M5 and he thinks it is the fastest car ever.

you MAY get him if he doesn't get a good launch off the, but on the freeway we ain't got enough HP to out gun the e39 M5.

actually, frank is probably right, i READ M3, not M5, when i responded initially... but the M5 is also 500lbs. heavier, so it would still be a good race

he is not the best with a manual. I have seen 0-60 from 4.7-5.3 for a E39 M5 so im guessing with him not being the greatest driver he will get a nice spanking

Even if he gets a perfect launch it will be neck and neck to a 100mph spring and thats providing he does get the perfect launch, but as stated , dont mess with him on a high speed attack ie 80/90/100 onwards as he will have the edge deffinatly there.

I know this for sure as a friend of mine owns one and we raced many a times, i beat him on all 0/60's 0/80's 0/100 but freeway runs was a different story as his 5.0ltr V8 was stronger on top ends than our 3.2's.

E39 M5 has a higher trap speed, therefore unless you have a pulley, you won't be able to keep up.

pulley and chip, it will be all C32

But either way, there are very strong cars stock or slightly modified (dinan chip, exhaust and intake)

modding any M5 will cost you an arm and a leg.

i agree. stock for stock, m5 should be faster than c32, maybe not necessarily in a 0-60 but that's a relatively pointless measure of performance anyway. on the highway, the m5's power advantage should be manifested, not so much depending on speed/gear/starting rpm. a slightly modded c32 vs a slightly modded e39 m5, i would like to see. but yea, significantly modding an e39 m5 is very very expensive

Ill let you guys know what happens. I think it will be a whoopin' for my buddy because he is a pretty bad driver. He just got the car a month ago or so and he still is getting the hang of the manual down, but i dont think he will ever get good at it.

If your buddy is a pretty bad driver still trying to get the hang of a manual, then the car is really irrelevant, isn't it?

He could have a E60 M5 for all intents and purposes, and he would still lose. From the sound of it, give him an Enzo or Carrera GT and he will still probably lose.

Don't want to bust your *****, but what's the point here? Doesn't seem like there will be much of a contest. You might be glad to shut your friend up, but otherwise you're just proving a really obvious point. The worse driver will lose.

The E39 M5 is a great car, and it's sad that it's wasted on such fools as your friend.

you need to chill out man he just got the car do you expect him to be a race car driver with it or what? He can drive the car fine, but when it comes to rowing the gears he isnt the greatest. Have you ever driven a Carrera GT? I bet not and my dads friend has one along with many other exotics and he had trouble getting the hang of driving it.

No offense intended. Peace

PS: you might want to counsel your friend to become a little more adept at rowing the gears before competing with you. Wouldn't want him to hurt the car...
