Just some freindly info. By cutting out the tub the car is now considered having unibody damage. The only time this comes into play is when you sell it. If you don't announce it to the buyer and they can prove that you knew it somehow you can get in big trouble.
Other than that looks great.....good job

I had the dealer reinstall the tub for me and they did a very good job. I would definitely let a new owner know the process I went through to install the new exhaust. I am not really worried about a problem in the future.

Thanks for the compliment.

Yes, the sound is a lot different, especially without the resonator. I will get some sound up when I have a chance. I need to break out the camcorder..

Not true. Mark has all the documented proof he needs on here to show that the car did not have unibody "damage". It's only a problem if the buyer decides to make it one.

Nice job! However what was your bottom line cost for all this work? And no performance gain u said? I'm a lil surprised.

Go to the table at the bottom of the page..."replaced panels"
It does not matter how nice it looks or even if the dealer did it. I have worked at an auto auction for the past 12 years. These are the rules at all auctions...the rules that the dealers have to live by. If a car comes through an auction and gets caught on inspection it will be branded for life.

Sorry for trying to be helpful...I'll stop doing that from now on.

I looked at the link.. I don't know how you consider the spare tub as a replaced panel. Nowhere does it specify the spare tub as a panel. It's a piece of plastic that holds a spare tire???

ok just a question here about this tub. Does it provide any support whatsoever to the frame of the car since it is a unibody construction? Like if i were to take it out myself and drive to a garage would it damage or warp or distort the frame?

that tub doesn't have any structure support mechanism for the car.
It is glued on to the body, and made of that poly-whatever plastic stuff.
It is not a panel. And if the car were ever to go to auction, it wouldn't be any different that any of those 1940's FORD customs with all fiberglass bodies.

50 years from now, if any of these cars survive, the only ones worthy of being auctioned at something like Barrett-Jackson, are those that have been left cherry-stock and have less than 30,000 miles. Good luck finding a W203 in that condition, 50 years from now.

Drive it like you stole it !!!

amgmark,

I'm also from San Diego and would like to do this mod for my Clk 500. Can you help me by give me the phone number to the shop that did your mod? I would really appreciated your help. Thank you.

Hi, I did most of the work myself. The only thing the shop did was weld on two bolts and cut out the resonator. Any shop should be able to do that for you. If you want to pm me I can give you the guy I used, but his shop is certainly nothing special.

This is an old thread but a lot of people have been talking about doing this mod as of late.
Can anyone comment on rather than swapping the spare tire tub with the C55just remove the C32 tub in the trunk and cover the hole. I don't use it for anything and have roadside assistance if I ever need anything. This would get rid of a small amount of weight and free up tons of space under the car for whatever exhaust route you wanted to go. Has anyone gone that route yet? If so, what did you use to cover the whole. Any ideas? I had thought of a custom speaker enclosure that would go in place of the spare tire tub but would rather have the exhaust in place first to see what kind of room I would be left with.

I am going through that process now. I cut out the spare tire tub awhile ago and I just had my rear bumper and exhaust done. I was thinking of putting a small bass box enclosure there, but there isn't much room for that now since the muffler takes up most of the space. I decided on placing some sheet metal over the hole and fastening it to the frame with nut rivets and rubber gasketing material. If I ever need to remove the sheet metal, I would only have to unbolt it. Fiberglassing would take too long anyways, waiting for the resin to cure. Once the sheet metal is in place, I'm going to dynamat the trunk area.
