Power loss-Not caused by I/C pump but Boot?

Ok, so I've been following the saga of the C32 power loss and tranny "jerk" problems though MBWorld for several months now and had come to the conclusion that my 2002 C32 was suffering from the dreaded dead intercooler pump and has also sustained a contaminated transmission after all the tell-tale symptoms. Last week, during a 100F degree day, while stuck in 2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic, I had no power and an uncomfortable, jerky ride as the car shifted back and forth. I took it to my local dealer, knowing the trusted CPO warranty would cover all. I suggested they look at these items for me.

Well, to my surprise, they stated that all my problems (additional ESP malfunction causing a Limp Mode event twice ) were caused by one cheesy little part. Apparently, an air intake boot can cripple the C32.

The partial invoice description is as follows: <found on road test air intake temperature was going too high and causing timing to retard and compressor to disengage>// replace complete air filter housing mount assy<came apart allowing engine compartment hot air to influence engine running conditions, causing lack of power and trans conditions// read and erase any tech set codes during insp process//road test after repairs//

Looks like the only related parts used were "Air Cleaner Rubber Mounts" Part #965 WSM 0.60.

Hmmmmmm... I hope that was all it was but I do NOT feel any better about what could be looming, down the road, for me if I am going to be possibly replacing an I/C pump or Tranny.

Has anyone else had this issue when they though it was the more expensive pump or Glycol TSB?

I feel a little stupid after going in with all my print outs of pump and tranny issues just to be told I just needed a new rubber.

Where/what exactly is this part and how can we inspect it to see if we have this problem?

Can you take a picture where this part is?

How much did it cost to replace? I may do this as preventive maintenance

Here's the deal, the dealer had my car for 7 days. By the time I picked it up, I was so excited to drive it, I did not get a tour under the hood from the advisor. As stated earlier, the invoice mentions the "air filter housing mount assembly" and "air cleaner rubber mounts". It was covered by warranty so the numbers are all zero's. Sorry that I can't offer more info.

K, well I was able to find this on alldata and it might apply. Not identical terms, but seems like it could at least relate:

Hope that's helpful.

Well, my car in currently in the dealer for the 35-45mph jerk problem and fwy speed off throttle vibration problem. It's my 3rd day in the dealer and I had let the lead mechanic test drove while I seat at the passenger side. After few local and fwy miles, he did notice the vibration on both issues.
I'm guessing the problem will be either transmission, drive shaft or both.
I am hoping they will just keep the car and hand me the $.

It almost sounds like hot air was leaking into the intake from the the engine bay, versus coming from the outside via the intake ducts.

But I'm not sure that you can attribute everything to the little rubber mounts that sit on the engine and hold down the airboxes.

Please let us know if your troubles return.

i remember i had a slight jerk problem 1 year ago specially on hot days. and this was the time I bought some green filters from neal, when I opening the air box I found the rubber on the air filter pinched on the air box. i installed the new filters and inspect everything. i have never felt the jerk again after this even on a 110 degree weather.

I believe you are dead-on with your take. Unfortunately, I appears today that the dealership was incorrect in their assessment. I was driving in alot of start and stop junkets today in temps varying from 72-90 degrees. Whether hot or cool, the car had the classic I/C pump symptoms again. After cruising at about 50 mph for about 2-5 minutes, I could mash it and...........nothing. I've read descriptions of the feel of a "lawnmower". I think the lawnmower would have smoked me. Thirty seconds later, I stomp on it and BAM! full power.

I went straight back to the dealer. Of course, they can't look at it until tomorrow at the earliest. I assume that means I'm out of my car for another week.

I am sure the rubber seal had something to do with the power loss. I know that it was not the fix though. I still can't figure out how it could have been the cause of the Tranny jerk.

Now that I think about it, I believe the car drove worse after this last "fix".

Update!

HA!I was right! My dealer has redeemed themselves by calling me a mere 4 hours after dropping the car off. Guess what? They said my Intercooler pump was out. Geez, that was what I told them over a week ago. Apparently, the computer "didn't throw a code" the first time but did today. Cool. I got this pump replaced before warranty runs out.

Sorry, the period after the 60 is the end of the sentence. Drop it off. I do not have any other info other than what was on the invoice.
