Oil changes, it's been discussed before, but...

I was wondering who plans to follow the service schedule and who plans to change the oil early? I'm rolling around 4500 now and am thinking to eat the cost of an oil change. Maintenance A is not until 10k. It can't hurt and it's only $100 or so. I will not have them reset the computer. After this, I will probably follow the schedule.

Waste? Possibly. Peace of mind? Yes.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I change my oil every 5000 miles, perfect time with Service A aswell.

I don't really know if it matters or not, however, it can't hurt.

I changed mine and

I figured that 10K was just too long, especially at first.

DIY change at 3500 and now am at 8000. Oilchange was easy except for refill, no dipstick issue so had to use the CPU. Therefore took several readings pre change to avg. and go back to when filling.

I drained from the bottom, and got everything out, (there is a debate about this issue too) Top or bottom. I am sure either is fine.

The 3500mi filter was filled with lots of visible yellow material. The oil itself looked great.

Service indicator on car said 2300 miles to go today, making that 10300. So the CPU doesn't sense the oil change all by itself.

Am I glad I changed it before 10k? absolutely,
Should I change it again before Sched A? wouldn't hurt. I would do it myself though. Only downside, might be a waste of $50 to me.

The oil should hold up fine for the full 10K miles, what you need to look for is the discoloration which is an indication of how much contamination you have. If the oil loses its transparency, in other words turns black, change it. I would opt for a 5K change and then get the A serv. at 10K.

I'm going to change mine at 3,000. Maybe it's old school thinking, but a new engine and all and moving parts potentially casting off metal shavings.... I've had cars where they scheduled a 1,000 mile change for this reason. And call me a cynic, but free maintenance and we'll see you at 10,000? Nah, what I paid for this car, I'll pay for the peace of mind too.

My car now has 71xx miles on it, and i had changed the oil some 2k miles ago. The next time will the the serv A.

BTW my sister has a 2000 CLK320. The oil on her car is changed regularly every 5000 miles. her car now has 24k miles on the odo. The problem is that the information that shows when you should go to the dealer is still at Serv A. Everytime we change the oil, the meter roll back a little, and it never seems tobe going to zero (time for schedule maintainance). Does anyone have simular problems on their other MB?

The weak link in the system in the dinky little oil filter. I have doubts it it will filter effectively for 10,000+ miles. I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles.
