Coilovers for performance
Wheels for looks
but why limit yourself to one??
Mods are like Lay's potato chips you can't have just one

I would think suspension would fall into the performance category rather than looks, but I guess its really both. The first thing I did was get new wheels.
My favorite mod is my C55 exhaust, it is both looks and sound, maybe a tad bit of performance. Not all that easy, and probably not worth it to most..
I agree that one mod is hard to pic..
My other favorite exterior mod is Bi-xenon's upgrade.
Haven't done much for my performance yet... Looking into LSD and Stage II..

if you dont have bix then upgrading to bix is def. the 1st choice for cosmetics. i dont have any performance upgrades but if i could afford it i would definitely go with a kleenmann supercharger

+1 with Bix. Think of resale value.
If you already have bix then the priority goes to suspension and wheels (I know they're two items, but you can't do one without another), again you can get a little money back on them by parting out, should you decide to sell the car.
The next on the list would be performance. Your car has plenty of power to begin with. Later on if you feel you need more power, then go with pulley and ECU.
It really depends on what you like to use your car for. If you like to track your car often or even street race, then the priority list might start with performance.

This question is worthless without a budget number IMHO.
Coilovers/spring/shocks would be a good mod for cosmetics and performance. As far as best money spent, the Sprint Booster was one of my best mods, but it was only like $250.

you guys all have some good ideas.
for some of you wondering what this is all about?
its just that i have been looking to do something to my car, but i can make up my mind on what i want to do. so i thought to see what ppl have done and then and what they think was the best money they had spent. in time, if my car does not encounter some major problems i will do a lot more mods and make it totally unique. but $$$ is always the problem. so as i get ideas for the best bang for the buck from what ppl have done may help me do the more important mods first. so thx for the help there are a lot of good ideas here.
but the first performance mod i think i'm going to end up doing is either the bigger brakes or the brabus sway bars.
one other question what is "Quaife LSD" ?????

After all my mods, I can say without question that the Quaife LSD is the best single mod for the W203 chassis. This is a mod that corrects what is in my opinion a bad decision on the part of the manufacturer. No 350+ HP car has any business being sold without a limited-slip differential from the factory - and I respect M-B less for doing so.

I agree with the sentiment, but BMW does the same with their new 335. No LSD. I guess it's all about the bean counters.
