Question Radiator leak - folow up and question...

The MB service dept discovered glycol contamination in the trany a week ago and now they say they have asked MB Canada what to do, and the reply was to change the rad only and flush trany lines. This is after the service mgr tells me this was the most purple color of trany fluid (biggest contamination) they have ever seen.

I asked if they had any data on the contamination level (I know that above 400mg/L contamination, they should change trany and torque converter as well). The service dept tells me they do not know as they only compared colors.

Any advise on how I can make sure that MB is not trying to cut corners here? The fact that they do not disclose a contamination level number makes me suspicious. Thanks

It's possible, I suppose, that the tranny was not harmed. I would have your objections noted in the maintenance record, and then you have a basis to go back if there is a problem in the near term.

Thank you, I will make sure of that.

I would be asking for an oil sample to be sent away for anaylsis.

I'd also be asking for a written extension of the gearbox warranty from MB. If you still have problems (rust in box or damaged friction linings). then it will usually show up pretty quickly (1st week-3 months)
