clicking sound under dash

Hello forum, my car has 84K+ miles and just yesterday I started hearing a loud clicking sound under my dash every 3 or so seconds for probably 30 seconds and then it stops. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it?

Thanks,
DM

stepper motor linkages... very common problems in W203s. Check the W203 C Class forum.

Yup, that's what mine did at about 50K miles. It will cost about $600 to repair if you do not have extended warranty. It is almost all labor, to remove the entire dash. Sorry about that.

pricing depends on which stepper linkage is broken. The stepper motor no longer needs to be replaced. Just the plastic linkage which has been modified to be thicker.

extended warranty does not cover it. at least not my MBUSA 7yr/100k warranty.

The stepper motor is the linkage that controls the air direction in the ventilation. The sound you hear is the motor trying to set the vent direction, unsuccessfully.

I not sure if yours is the same, but mine sounded like someone shooting a large rubber band at the underside of mid dash, for about 30-60 seconds. Still, would have cost me $610 without the CPO.

Yep. Same thing happened to my C32 but at 40K miles. MB Star Warranty covered it.

I listed the instructions on how to do this in the W203 section a short while back. I also have a bunch of these updated linkages just laying around if anyone is interested in doing it themselves. If anyone is local to the DFW area I can either guide you through it for a cheap fee or do it for you.

If anyone is interested in getting one of the linkages from me, just message me.
