C32 AMG vs E500

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and looking to turn in my '00 V8 Lincoln LS for an '03 Mercedes. I'm kind of torn between the C32 AMG & the E500. The E500 is the same size with a V8 as the LS, although on Edmunds there were alot of reviews of electrical problems. The C32 AMG has great reviews, but seems a little small.

Can I get some feedback from people with experiences with these two Mercedes?

Thanks.

Here are some pics of my Lincoln LS.

Well I just recently became a C32 owner myself and I'll give you my experiences in the first few days of ownership. The car is a great car and most of all, a fun car to drive. I've found out that there are some known and typical problems with the C32, however once you're past them, the car performs well. After buying mine, I had to have the Super Charger/Intercooler system serviced, seat motor and control module replaced, a glycol test (my dealership did this for free,... I think they all are now), and bushing replacement in the front end. Fortunately, all this was done under warranty at no cost to me.

Just go over the car good. Check for these problems,... if you're getting it from a dealer, ask them to perform the glycol test. Drive the car,... hard and on the freeway. Make sure the Super Charge kicks in whenever you ask it to. If it's there sometimes and absent other times, tell them to check the Intercooler pump,... first. There could be other problems causing this.

Some of these other guys could tell you much more. Listen to them,... they know what they're talking about. I started a thread towards the beginning of the month asking they same thing you are:

https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c55-amg-w203/195973-buying-c32-needed-advice.html

Browse thru it,... I learned what I needed to know.

Don't know anything about the E500,... except the C32 would most likely pound it's doors in. But that might not be what you're looking for.

I agree with Frank,... drive them both and see whatcha thnk!

I agree with FrankW. In fact, I will go a little further and suggest you are comparing apples and oranges between the C32 and E500. The C32 is smaller, lighter, quicker (acceleration/braking), more powerful and handles better than the E500. The C32 is an AMG class and the 03' E500 is not. The AMG badge says Mercedes high performance. Don't get me wrong, the E500 is a beautiful sedan. Again, like FrankW says go drive them and feel the difference inside and out.

I must say...that's gotta be one of the best looking Lincoln's I've ever seen!

Coming from the LS, I'd say go for the E500, with extended warrenty. It's a great car, and with your taste at modding, you'll be sure to have a really good looking one too!

i have both so maybe i can give you some input here.

i have a 2005 e500 4matic and a 2002 c32 amg.

the c32 is definitely a quicker car and more well built. you don't hear the random creaks and squeaks that you see in the e500. i have also noticed that the leather in the c32 is of better quality then the e500. there are little things like panel gaps in the e500 that SHOULD NOT exist in a $70k car.

on the other hand, the e500 does have a little more room then the c32 (this should NOT be a make it or break it thing- the room is minimal and doesn't really count). the e500 is a more comfortable ride and behave different from the supercharged c32. i like the massaging seats and the gauge cluster on the e500. the overall few inches on the outside make it a better looking car.

if i had a choice of buying either of these cars separately for the prices i paid for them. i would leave the e500 and take the c32. now if the prices were the same, i'd go for the e500.

i'd personally take an e320 over both- only because of the fuel prices these days.

Interesting post though. So does the E not offer substantialy more rear leg room than the C? I'd always thought otherwise and always recommended it the perfect family express so I guess I should have sat in one. The 5 is much bigger than the 3 and the A6 than the A4 so I just assumed having been in a C32 that trhe E would be much larger.

my mistake. i meant on the e500. i have both cars in my driveway. the difference in seating room is minimal. you can probably fit the middle person better in the e500. but it's still the "*****" seat and i wouldn't want to sit there over a 400 mile trip. if you want big get the s, it's not that much more expensive.

Yeah, the middle seat is terrible on all cars. On the W211, is it a proper seat? I only ask as I remember many of the german taxis are W210s and when the W211 came out they complained the middle seat was unsuitable. Hope that makes sense.

S is just too big for me, though I think the GL450 will make a perfect family vehicle as 7 seats can be a big plus.

Which E500

There was the original AMG E500 built in the mid to early 90's, and the new E500 built in the early 2000's. The original was quite a rare item. A cooperative effort by MBZ, AMG and Porsche. The radical lowering and front fender flares where the result of Porsche doing the suspension. I've never seen any back to back test against other AMG models. Anyone have any test data they could post

I was looking at both before I chose the C32. I was looking for a replacement for my RX-7 and still drive around with a car seat. The E500 was a "nicer" car to me than the C32 was. The fact remained that the C32 was far, far, far more fun to drive. The E class has more of the keep you entertained bells and whistles and a bit cleaner of an interior (vice the shouldn't be there gaps mentioned earlier). It also comes with a few less problems than the C32, no supercharger means less headaches! If you want a powerful, yet refined car with poor gas mileage then the E500 is for you, if you want a fun car with incredible power, handling and poor gas mileage then pick the C32! In the end drive both, that is when the C32 won out for me. Good luck!

I'd go for the E500 than the C32 IMO

Mostly for better space, fuel economy as what TopGun mention.

man i love those cars the w124 chassis rare and i think the cars price is going up now because back then when i was looking at them they were aroun 13k to 15k and now they are just on 20k to 23k. i would deffenantly buy the car over the e500 c32 and even c55 i would think twice though with the e55. when they first came out though its the fastest car beat the ferrari testarossa and declared king of the highway

http://mercedesshop.com/500e.htm

self leveling suspension basically what you get from the the E500 from now you get it from the E500/500E from then

unbelievable car !!!!!!!!!!

i hope you guys know about this car this is the CLK63 black series back in the days. i respect that car greatly somebody own one?
