The car has never said it's low, but I tend to dribble in a few oz's every couple thousand miles. I usually average 1qt added between changes.
I actually just switched the AMG to Amsoil European formula 5w-40 (I use their stuff in all my other vehicles) as this stuff made a noticeable improvement in my Mini Cooper S for overall cylinder sealing, compression & smoothness. Not to mention it cut my blowby oil scavenged in the Mini's catch tank down to almost nothing. Only had it in the AMG for a week now but it's happy so far. And yes, it's on the MBZ approved list for the car.

On another note of oil differences, I did some research and found that Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP Formula M (which is MB 229.51 approved) differs from the Mobil 1 0W-40 (MB 229.5) in that beside the slight cold temperature rating, it was designed mainly to improve emission. Further more, the ESP Formula M is manufactured in the U.S.

Amsoil is available direct or from some local distributors. Usually never seen in most retail stores however. I buy enough of it (3 cars & 1 bike) where I just became a small time dealer (bought the membership), so the cost for me is the same as Mobil 1.
Here's the link to their Euro formula for our cars:

If you can't find it I could probably ship you a case as I'm ordering some in the next few days, so let me know. But it's not like I sell this stuff for money, I just need to order some more for my next oil change & spares.

I had to add a quart between the initial service (3,000 miles?, don't remember exactly) and the 11,000 mile mark. Techs said it was ok, fairly normal, especially during breaking in period. Since then, maybe one half quart. I carry a quart plastic bottle in the trunk, just in case. I have the 2006 C-55. No dipstick to check. Just goes by computer sensor. I had another oil service at 21,000 and now have 27,000 miles. Will be 2 years old on Sept 1st.

Made an appointment with the dealer for Monday... I've burned about 4 quarts in 3,300 miles... Granted I drive it hard, but hmmmmm... I have 46,500 miles on my C55 and it's an 05'...

2005 C55 with 66,000 miles. Change oil every 5,000 miles. In all 2 years only had 'Check oil level' or something like that once. Never tried to go over 5,000 miles without oil change so can't tell if my car would need extra oil.

OT but how are C32 owners doing on this? Mine just had it's first 5k oil change and didn't need any in between. Ole! First fast car I've owned which didn't use some oil.
4 quarts in 3,300 miles sounds very excessive for a modern car. My "worst" was my '97 M3 and that used about 1 every 2,000 miles or so -- and the S52 engine in those cars is known to use a little oil.

I now have just a bit over 75,000 miles on my '05 C55. Change oil every 5,000miles. Yesterday got message to add qt of oil at the next gas station. Just before my last oil change I had the same message right before I had to go change the oil.
Question: should I be concerned? If in driving 65,000 miles I only had to add oil once and now I had to do it by the end of my 5,000 interval between oil changes - is this normal? I doubt we have such a high milage C55 on the forum but any input would be appretiated.
P.S. my tech says it's normal but I just can't see why would car wont need any extra oil for 65,000 miles and then start asking to add1 qt every 5,000.
Thanks guys!

i get the "add a quart next gas station stop" alot as well (sometimes as soon as 2500 miles)...i've been getting the "add quart" for a little over a year or so now...i drive my car in "M" mode all the time, so i assume i'm using more oil than the average person, but the rate that i get these messages is excessive i think...i usually just take it for an oil change when the message pops up...i think i should try driving in "S" and not shift to see how long i can go with an oil change...it's so hard no to put it in "M" mode and mash out everywhere...

Ever since the dealer finally diagnosed my oil consumption problem being loose valve covers, I haven't needed to add oil between changes. I change oil when the car notifies me, about every 11,000 miles. I have 35k now. I told the dealer about a burning smell a few different times before they finally figured it out. Not happy about that. Seems like it should have been an easy one to diagnose for them.

Car is in for the verified oil consumption problems. It's down over 3l in less than 2500 miles. I'll let you guys know what I find out. I've also never had any oil leaks noticeable on the floor- e.g. from a leaky valve cover or whatever, (at least as far as I know).

My C55 uses very little oil, except on the track where I might add 2 or 3 quarts over a 3 day event. Drove 1800 miles each way to/from Willows, CA for StarFest at Thunderhill. No oil use on trip, 3 quarts during driving events.
