My heated driver seat burned me

I was driving home just an hour ago and turned my seat heater on high. A couple minutes later, I had to lift my butt off the seat quickly because the leather became so hot it was unbearable even through my clothing. Then the inside of my car started to smell like something was on fire. I got home quickly and got out of the car and put my nose to the bottom of the seat and something was definitely burning under that leather...it smelled horrible. I stayed in the garage for a few minutes to make sure my seat didn't burst into flames or something crazy like that.

Anybody experience something like this before? My car is a 2003 C32. This seems like a serious safety issue. Wanted to see if anybody here has experienced this before I call the dealer. Thanks.

The manual states that you must not turn on the heated seats when it is August and hot as Hades.

Kidding as(s)ide though, I think this happened to people who have had their seat heaters replaced - i.e. it's too hot. Did you get them replaced and this was your first time using them? If so, the smell may be just the elements being heated up for the first time.

a forum member in a CLK430 had a similar issue a long time ago. He actually had the heater burn a hole in his seat and in his clothing. The dealership replaced everything and said sorry for the troubles. That for sure is not a good thing and hopefully MB can good will that if you are out of warranty.

Thanks for the laughs guys. Yeah, it could have been an explosive evening if I had cabbage and beans last night for dinner. I wasn't hungry and didn't eat dinner.

August usually is hot as hades here in the Bay Area, but sometimes the fog rolls inland and cools things off pretty good, hence my butt needed warming.

The heaters have never been replaced....all original. Man...I just had my car at the dealer last week to replace the driver door lock and had the rear sway bars replaced. This is annoying. Lucky me, I purchased a 4-year warranty only 3 months ago for less than $3K.

I had my heated seats replaced and they get crazy hot.. LOL.. I just turn it down to low if it gets too hot. Never smelled anything burning though.. My wife loves it, but she also takes scalding hot showers..

Maybe it's Sayyyy-tan?
Yes brothers and sist-tahs, you must pay for your sins of excess!
Sins of excess HP, torque, and for driving Mercedes, for it easier for
a Mercedes driver to pass through the eye of a needle, than to enter the pearly gates, say halla-ley-lu-yah!

May your ****, burn in heated seat hell....

Just kidding of course.

it sounds to me like you are just looking for an excuse to moon your service advisor ("can't you see the burn?")

Amen to that, it sucks.

That famous saying, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco," (usually attributed to Mark Twain, but almost as often to nobody in particular) is holding true for much of the whole Bay Area this year.

So, here's to seat heaters (at least those that don't burn your ****)!

ml 270 heated seat nearly caught fire

I was driving my ml270 the other day when I decided to put on my heated seat to ease my sore back. After about 2-3 minutes the seat got extremley hot and started to smoulder.I stopped and got out the smell of burning was terrible and panic set in.I had a bottle of water in the car which i poured over the base of the seat which seemed to extinguish the smouldering and smoke.maybe not the brightest thing to do as i dont know how the Heated seat operates.(voltage ect...)There is a tiny scorch mark on the cushion base but not anything you would notice.Has anyone had similar problems with this?

Earlier MLs had this problem. I remember reading one seat starting a small seat fire when the seat overheated.

My 2003 ML 350 did the same thing. Burnt a hole right through the leather. Took the stealership all winter to get a replacement seat.
