Almost everyone I've talked to said to have one while you have the car. (and before you guys rip me another one, I just learned all this a couple months ago, and by all means correct me if I'm wrong) If you are the original owner, you can get the MB extended warranty. If you bought it used I don't think you have that option for an MB extended so you have to go with a 3rd party. I ended up talking to my service advisor at our local dealer first and simply asked who they prefer doing business with. I figure, they would know since they do the claims/billing etc... I heard all kinds of stories. He actually advised not getting one until I was a month or 1,000 miles (I have two years left) because you may consider selling the car before the factory warranty ends. I had also heard an extended warranty becomes more expensive as you get towards the end of the factory one?? Since I keep my cars a long time, I went ahead and got one. I'm good for the next 5 years/100k. (by then a used C63 will be affordable) These warranties are transferable too. I also learned that these, just like anything else are negotiable. I had a bogus $200 inspection fee waived as well as the surcharge for the "navigation equipment" ($200) taken off to get me to sign. I'd suggest reading the fine print though no matter what you do. I missed the whole oil change frequency thing, but I don't think that matters.

I dunno how many miles you have the on car or how MB's extended warranties work but how many miles did you have on the car when you purchased teh warranty?

My car is just a few weeks away from 1 year old and has about 14k miles on it. The MB website has some info on extended warranties but expressly excludes AMG models from those quotes...

Also, when you purchase the extended warranty is the # of years in addition to the factory warranty years? or is it from the day of purchase? i wouldn't want to purchase an extended warranty that begins now.. no point in that..

is any portion of it refundable/pro-rated if u sell the car or total it?

the ELW (extended limited warranty) from mercedes is the one you want if you are the original owner. it starts after your warranty ends (either by hitting 50k miles or 4 years, whichever is first).

this page describes what you need to know.
http://www.mbusa.com/care/warranty/extended-limited.do

AMG models are provided for, but it obviously makes the price jump up. basically you can buy the warranty anytime during the warranty period but it goes up as time passes. you can get a full refund if you end up selling the car before the extended warranty kicks in, although i imagine it would be a significant selling point for this kind of car anytime near

my service advisor at FJ told me you want the factory warranty. he said basically it's the CPO warranty. aftermarket warranties he says are problematic; sometimes the aftermarket companies will specify refurbed parts, etc.

the prices listed are negotiable as far as i am concerned. FJ tried to charge me MORE than these listed prices, btw.

i'd say get shop heavily for one of these warranties before you hit 1 year. i made one phone call and got 10% or so off the posted prices.

good luck and tell us how you did.

I bought my '05 C55 from a private seller (off lease). It had 14K miles on it. The actual terminology for my warranty is called a "wrap around" 7yr/100k miles (from time of original purchase). At this point in time, I have 2 years (35k miles) left on factory and 5 years (85K) on the extended. On my ext warranty, there are some things it covers that the factory doesn't. Again, talk to your service dept guy and ask him which extended warranty company is better. Some companies will not pay a claim until they send an adjuster out to see if they could trim down the bill. That will sometimes cost time because they won't release the car until they are paid. The point on genuine MB parts is true too. And since the dealer does business with this particular warranty company, I heard they will sweeten the deal for a new MB down the road by reimbursing you for the remainder or roll it over towards the new one. Definitely shop around for comparison and leverage when negotiating. The highest quote I got was $9,000 (not a misprint) -They simply didn't want to cover an AMG (probably burned by the C32). The lowest was around $2,500 up in North Hollywood and they called me every day for two weeks. I ended up paying around 3 for mine. Pricey, but what'ya gonna do. With my wife driving the car more than me, something's gonna break on it.

unfortunately, i'm at 14K miles and just under a year.. the MB warranty has a surcharge after 12k miles or 1 year. What's worse is that when I asked my dealer for a quote they REFUSED to sell me this warranty at all saying that i'm past the 12k mile limit. Does this sound right?? i don't think so.... she was the finance manager and told me i shoudl try another dealer but it's their policy to not sell MB's warranty after that time period...

she continued by giving me crazy prices for aftermarket warranties.. $5300 for a 5 year/100k mile warranty that begins from the factory in service date.. not the end of the factory warranty.. WTF? sounds like a bunch of crap to me..

yeah, the best thing to do is research as many of these as you can and come up with your own conclusion as to which one will work the best for you.

I got my extended warranty for around $1500 from a company called car solutions, underwritten by Mercury Insurance. (on an 02 C32 amg - third owner)

Zero deductible and covers (almost) everything for 3 years or when the car reaches 75,000 miles.

So far they've paid for $1400 worth of repairs without question. I hope to eventually break even.

Silver Metalic,

I have a 02 C32 with a extended MB warranty that will run out Sep 08. My car has 52500 miles. I was wondering when you purchased the service contract from car solutions was your car under warranty. If so, how many months of warranty were remaining when you got the new coverage from car solutions. What I want to know is if I should shop for a 3 year warranty now or wait till I am close to the end of my current warranty.

Thanks much.

Actually, my car was 1 month out of warranty when I purchased this. I think you might be better off getting a replacement warranty prior to your running out. Good luck.

Isn't there a consensus to the best aftermarket warranty available out there? Seems with so many of us that want, need and use them, there would be one that stands out as the clear leader?
