stearing column is broken
Has this happened to anyone with they'er cars. My tilt is not going up or down. You can hear the motor turning but no movement. I can still extend or retract the stear

This is correct. Its in the shape of an hourglass. Not so much difficult to do, you need to take apart just about the entire interior (sans pass. side stuff of course).

This exact same problem just started happening for me a couple weeks ago. I have an appointment with the dealership on Friday to get it fixed (still under warranty). Will post details and part numbers after work is done.

Well, Essentially, its just removing the panel beneath. But it is much more involved than your thinking. First, youll need to remove the center console, then the center vents, then the center trim panel, then radio. Then you can take out the three t-20's holding in that panel under the steering wheel. (not to mention the lower encap panel below that, along with corresponding items attached to it.) Then, youll need to pull the steering wheel, steering colum module, and instrument cluster. Then, you can access the two 13mm bolts to the colum, then drop the colum down a little bit, replace that piece, and reverse everything you just did. If you would like me to go further in depth, shoot me a PM. It may take a few hours for me to give you a full write up. I would recomend you take it in to the dealer.

Actually, if you take the black under dash panel out, you can reach up and remove the broken pieces and CAREFULLY bend the new piece in a V and kind of work it on to the two shafts. I have done it several times at work.

I think 1 203-462-06-78 is the part number for the coupling that needed replacement.
Since my C32 was still under warranty the repairs did not cost anything.

Just had to have this done UGH!!!!
My Dealership charged me $540 Labor, and $4.31 for the part... Lucky for me I had extended warranty. But does this seem high? Is it really that much labor..??
Mine is an E55, but Same part# listed above. Found this thread through google / part number..

I have 2005 c240, and I has the same troubles(the tilt steering wheel halt "up & down").
Today I brought back from the dealer.....the total repair cost was $1051.01(a part, the labor, etc).
A part was 203-462-06-78 A Coupling Col($9.03)
Labor was $946.53(7 & 1/2 hours).....$125 per hour in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Pay Shop Charge For Repair Order was $27.88
I believe that the part is not high at all.....the labor is very expensive!
But at least they fixed it and I feel good about.

Pics would be great but I would settle for a description of which panel to remove and how, and any other tips on the R&R of the part. I think I'll buy two of them in case I break one and give this a try if I can get some direction on where to begin (pretty please!).

Can anyone please share clear instructions for removing the parts for accessing this gear / "coupling column". I am interested in what to remove and how to remove it.
About Nick's and AMGC's comments: Can you please describe when you reach in (without opening all the other parts), a few things such as:
. how far do you have to go from the opening before reaching this part,
. which side of the steering column to feel for it,
. once you have grabbed it how do you remove it (i.e. pulling it straight
out, or vertically, or squeezing from the two ends, or bending from the
middle, ...),
. whether to worry about "knocking" some other component out of position
while trying to pull out / install this coupling column
. etc.
Even 2-3 pictures would help much too, particularly of where to reach in from, pointing to the approx location of this part (from behind the steering column cover), ...
If you would care, any one w/ any info please PM me too.
