The Most Expensive Car to Maintain

Thank God for extended warranties...I may single handedly put this one out of biz...A brief history during my 2 years of ownership:

beginning mileage: 31,595

5/06
Rear Door Lock $81
Air pump $379
Sear control - 3 fuses $11

11/06
defective door lock continues to cycle $284
c/s balancer coming apart $424
driver seat heater not functioning $571
ticking noise - replace right rocker bridge $736
B service - $375

2/07
ticking noise - replace regeneration valve $189
suspension knock - replace stab links $176
supercharger cut out - could not replicate

4/07
supercharger cut out - replace aux waterpump $507
suspension noise - could not replicate

6/07
driver headrest inoperable - replaced $157
passenger headrest replaced - $157
front brake pads/rotors - $739
service a - $250
replace sway bar bushing to address issue from 4/07 - $188

1/08
Fuel filter - $238
rear brake pads - $255
headlight level sensor - $278
trans connector leak - $154
front radius busing cracked - $352
right rear seat belt retractor - $337
left rear seat belt retractor - $228
driver seat heater (2nd time) - $838
service b - $420

wanted $740 for spark plugs and $210 for battery - denied

4/08

In today for alternator - $1100?

Mileage out 68,241

So for roughly 37k miles, it has cost $9424 in scheduled/unscheduled maintenance. That breaks down to $3.88 per mile without fuel/tires. For anyone that is questioning an extended warranty, don't think just do it. If it wasn't such a great car for the 3 months between dealer visits I would have put it into Lake Michigan a la "Risky Business". It might be cost prohibitive to keep it going once the extended is out....

What is important here that most of these problems here listed (with the exception of the supercharger and air pump) are common with all c class cars, not just the AMG. Makes me wonder why extended warranty companies dont turn down all C classes and only the C32?

Hey moosejaw:

I don't know about your MB dealer, but I just bought, last week, an exteneded warrenty for my C32 from Bobby Rahal MB. Granted I only had 20,000 miles on her, but still, $1300.00 for 3 years or 45,000 miles, sounded good enough for me.

See yeah

PS: WOW, sorry about your headaches OP, but they really are fun cars

You caught my attention, did you buy the warranty seperately? or with the car? Im my posts i should have clarified aftermarket warranty. sorry!

That is a great deal, I would like to keep my car for years to come and maybe get a 335i or older m3 for a daily driver. C32 is hard car to replace (unless it's a e55 of course)

Hey moosejaw:

No, I bought the car in St. Louis, and picked up the warrenty from my local dealer, 3 days before the original warrenty expired. I forget the name of it, but it is good at ANY MB delaer, and it is bumper to bumper with a $0 deductable. It sounded pretty good to me as well, but keep in mind my rate was so low do to my low milage. I was informed at Bobby Rahal, that the price does vary with mileage. Go firgure, but it should be availbe at ANY MB dealer, atleast according to Bobby Rahal. Sorry to hear about all of your torture, demise, etc. Mine has only had the ususal, IC pump, Drivers side heated seat cushion, and 1 control modular for the power seats. Pretty standard MB BS.

Good luck my friend

See yeah

I also bought my warranty after the purchase. Got it through the local dealer. You may want to do it sooner rather than later. A lot of them are priced depending on how many miles you have. It went up considerably after 30k miles.

owning a MB is like a hobby..

you really need to like buying parts and finding the right place to have them installed.

But don't try to think by owning a MB you need to pay extra.

pulley, belts, oil, fluids, bushing, lights.. ect ARE just like any OTHER car.

For example... I had my trans fluid changed for under $100 with MB parts.

How? Find a friendly mechanic that is willing to price low if you give them all your business.

He charges me like $30 bucks to do my oil changes, if I bring all the parts and fluids.

He is like my 2nd garage with a lift.!!!

The only thing I can't fix are electrical issues.. seat modules, codes, SAM's ect. But the mechanical issues are no problem.

I do agree.. the C32 has been a problem child.. but they are minor stuff.

TopGun32 is right on the money.

Those prices are ridiculous. My car has 108K miles and I'm about to service for the first time the transmission and change the fuel filter. This is what I pay:

Fuel filter-$99.40
Trans filter-$26.60
Gasket-$9.45
Seal ring-$.70

Fuel filter - $238

This is a < 30 min ordeal and you can find the fuel filter for probably under 80 bux....

There are a few DIYs in the non amg section. I believe install university has one.

+1 I've had the C32 for a long time and never had any problems with it and I thought I hammered my C32 too hard since I took it to the track a few times a month

Could it be maybe a specific build date or time frame where Mercedes was using lower quality parts. I know a couple of other friends (one owns a C32 and the other owns SLK32) both with over 80,000 miles on the car and never had any major or costly issues like this (at least yet anyways).

All shops will charge based on brand but will heavily undercut the Stealership!

If you find a good mechanic the prices will be alot better and owning isn't bad....usually once the common bad parts are fixed they usually don't re-occur.

I need to find an independent for regular maintenance. Luckily all the rest is covered by extended warranty. But I know why the extended warranty companies block a lot of AMG cars. They are about 7k in the red on mine

I agree that they are all minor things that hopefully won't be reoccuring issues. At least I get to thrash on new c classes for a few days everytime I bring it in...
