Misfire issue need help to minimize list of possibilities

Vic,
Bring it over to Fluid Motor Union by us. They are really good guys and are the ones that found jerry's misfire (bad cats) Me and andy will have our cars there this or next week for some additional work as well.
If its a coil pack, swap the pack with another one and see if the error follows the pack.
I have a good feeling though, that it is the cats...

he's talking about something like this.

basically if your engines tests even across all cyclinders you have a pretty healthy engine. If the difference is more then 10% then there might be some issues with your engine.

Lets see...I am checking with Sam in the AM on Wednesday...loosening the cats and driving it hard to see if misfire continues...if misfire stop how can I tell if its the Secondaries or Primaries? I take it I should do one side at a time to see which set of cats may be the culprit? Also Reaer SAM does anyone have a used one for sale? Anyone have Schematics for the rear SAM?**cough** Splinter

Ok bought a bottle of Octane booster and Cheveron Techeron and refilled with 93 octane for the 4/5th time in a row...well I took a 9 mile ride both ways with my friend and he was able to create the misfire again...pulling current codes it showed P0300,P0301,P0304 AND P0108....which P0108 is new showing map sensor stuff. Anyway took 1st plug off each side and they look alike but front left (1st cylinder) spark plug one it showed .45 gap while front right(4th cylinder) at .41 gap. I am planning on buying all new plugs and replacing them as well as the map sensor.

Spoke with Jerry and he feels the culprit is the plugs so buying a new set(even though told no need to just to regap to .33) and going to change them. He really feels that the different gaps are causing this issue especially with me running this much boost. He even offered to take a day off work to help me out...what a classy guy

Well based off stuff I tried it looks like the Spark plugs are the culprit they are on there way bought a new set of Denso IK20s from Ebay and are in transit..............hopefully it can be installed before dragway season is over...I need to have Glenn see taillights ....to make sure my old 89 octane is fully out of system
Thanks for asking

Well after checking two spark plugs from each side of engine and one gapped at .41 while the other is at .45 well my extra boost seems to trigger the misfire when pushing the throttle hard. So hopefully after changing to new ones the misfire is gone. I also have the factory wires and will replace the if necessary to weed out the wires and plugs

Its a boost problem, I doubt the plugs are doing it. Seriously, this all started after you took off the ASP and put the 185 on. Betcha that if you remove the 185, problem will go away!! Engine can't take the boost, the heat (or the driver). Now, who is showing whom taillights? Only one's I have seen are Jake's?? Wanna try my Code III

Well we'll see if the plugs are the issue and its on hopefully the belt wrap will help you but I had no worries trying you with the 178 what makes you think I will worry with the 185? Remember I and Jake are the same when he did the 12.4 now only difference is a 50 shot, LET intake, cyro to 12.33 but I think with good DRs that 12.3 is attainable. I have the best C32 guy helping me with the misfire its will be solved.

They should be gapped at .34 - .38 max.
Why wouldn't his car be able to take the boost when others can?
This quote is right out of a repair handbook in my garage.
"Random misfires may be due to fouled spark plugs, plug gap too wide, bad plug wire, weak ignition coil, cracks or carbon tracks in an ignition coil."
This is a common problem on high boost cars.

You are right, changing his pulley back to ASP would fix the problem....because it would remove 5 lbs of boost.

Guys this forum is for the educated minds/Gearheads..everyone has their personal opinions on how things happen or work...I feel even by going back to an ASP that the problem is only being masked....I trust the 185 pulley and know our cars can handle it rather its close or not(Jake among others is doing quite well).....I know improper gapping can cause an issue and the fact I have stressed the spark plugs by drag racing the car some I can see how plugs, wires, or other things can start to fail sooner then later...........because its a high load misfire I can see how the improper gapping is causing misfires and the codes always show P0301 and P0304 which to me means cylinder 1 and 4 the ones with the gapping issue as well as P0300...so lets try it first....if for some reason its not I am confident Jerry will help me find the cause...right now new replacement plugs is all I bought but I still have the OEM wires if we need to replace the wires. If I drive normal and even step on it I usually can't get the misfire to happen again. Honestly I don't think anymore this is anywhere a complicated issue as I originally made it sound.....but honestly guys your possible solutions are very welcomed and will be tried if all others fail

Glenn - With his plugs gapped at .41 and .45, 22 PSI is blowing out his spark causing the misfire.
They should be gapped at .34 - .38 max.

I had this identical problem ~6 weeks ago (misfires only under high load/high RPM shortly after installing a larger pulley). First thing that popped into my head was plugs, but after reading the plugged cat threads on here, I figured that was it. Checked the cats and they were fine. Checked the plugs and they gaps were off. Put in a fresh set of properly gapped plugs, and the problem went away.
