Talking C55 or Monster Truck (Exhaust Related)

Well today I finally did some more hacking on my exhaust.

I went from the primary cats to an x-pipe, and then straight pipes the rest of the way making true duals. I was able to keep my original AMG tips on by doing some creative welding. Looks factory sounds, well um....... LOUD

It is not very bad during normal cruising around, getting there sounds like a mini monster truck event if you get on it with any sort of medium acceleration in mind. WOT is close to the sound of a monster truck when they first step on it.

I will see how long it takes me to decide if I like this or if it is to much for the road. Car did feel like it had a lot more torque. I am not sure if that is possible.

I did have 2 new model Z06 ask me what I had done to it on the ride home. I was told by one that it was the meanest sounding mercedes he had ever heard. Then as the light changed he said "good luck with the wife factor"

That made me chuckle

I will post one when I have more then just the iPhone camera. I am getting used to the sound now. It really just requires you to be smarter about your throttle choices. When you want it loud you get on it, when you don't you stay out of the throttle.

There is most assuredly more torque as it barks hard into second with my 265's in the rear. It never used to do that.

I am curious if anyone else is running this setup.

Wife said it sounded like she was at the drag strip when I left the driveway. My neighbor laughed and ask me to shut it down and coast down the street after 10PM. He is not one to talk with his collection of sixties and seventies muscle cars.

I may adapt this into some sort of an electric cutout system. It really does sound nice...... with that said; it will not be good for everyday driving unless your very tolerant of V8 engine noise.

I am not a fan of loud exhaust. I had the secondary cats and resonator removed. These were replaced with 2.5" pipings to a Magnaflow dual inlet/outlet 24 x 5 x 8" muffler with an internal perforated TrueX crossover. From there a pair of 2.25" piping took the gases to the stock mufflers which has 2.125" inlets. The result is quite pleasing... it is actually quieter than stock at idle, more importantly the mild resonance band was moved from 2400~3000 rpm (stock) to 1600~2200 rpm which means whisper quiet cruising at freeway speeds. Charging hard at 3000 rpm to the redline it is about the same volume as stock but a tad smoother in note. There is a little bit more V8 burble between 1600~2200, but nothing that you'll notice with the windows up.

The car got an LET custom tune to 91 octane California **** but is otherwise stock. Dynos at 315 hp / 331 lb-ft recently with stock paper filters and right after the ECU tune. I'll redyno it with the K&Ns in and after the ECU is given a week to "learn" its new maps.

sounds like you have your tuned to be a sleeper with more class......Did you by chance get a dyno with just the exhaust and not the LET tune? I would be curious to see what you gained.

I am also going the slightly quieter route this AM, after getting pulled over leaving the grocery store last night. Officer whom knows me said, "I think your state required exhaust has some how become damaged by a speed bump, please tone it down a hair". Then we shot the chit about family and wives etc. Glad to know the local boys, has saved me a few times.

So this AM I am off to the shop to find some small mufflers to put on each hind quarter to give me the tone I am looking for, without that V8 rasp associated with straight pipes.

Guess it was fun while it lasted.

Updates to come later.

i have the exact same setup and have had it for about 4 months now and im in the same boat as you.... Im still figuring out whether to keep it or not.

From the outside, the car sounds mean as hell, and is pretty loud, but not obnoxious. From the inside, it isnt that bad except.... at about 2000-2200 rpm there is some bad drone(turning up the stereo does drown it out for the most part).... when going slow at 1000-1500 rpm its no problem, as well as punching the throttle past 2500 rpm.

Ideally Id like to keep the volume about the same and get rid of the drone.
