How do you prevent the timing chain from breaking?
I thought these motors were indestructible?

Thats scary, please anyone who is an authority pls chime in.....

yeah a interesting discovery. i always thought timing chains were life time or at least 140k.

^^ my s2 is chain driven never gave me fuss whatsoever. I'm getting sick of the c32 problems now days..... pain in da A**.

i heard they dont break but they do get a little loose over time and causes the valves need to be readjusted.

Yeah just to clear that up, the chain didnt break but it stretched so much that it was skipping when you cranked the motor.

I searched google for "c32 amg engine internals" but only found pics of a c36 (http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w202...nals-pics.html). It also has a chain.

I wish we could make a wiki with every schematic for every part in our car.

Unfortunately no, the stretched chain caused to much damage internally that simply replacing it wont bring the engine back to life. The compression test also confirmed this, if the compression was at least good then a new chain and new valves will probably bring it back to life.

So when do you recommend changing the chain?

Will you can get your compression back you would need new pistons and rings. Now my qs is, is there any damage to your cylinder head or block ? If there isn't any damage i can recommond you to a Engine building shop. cheapest way to do this would be tearing your motor apart yourself and drop the block off at the shop, let them reuse the rods and install new Pistons and rings, i done the process before out of my garage, down time is key.

Usually I wouldnt they are supposed the last the life of the engine. I think my car may be a isolated case, but id have to find out who has a higher mileage C32.


While I do have alot of down time I really dont have the patience to tear down the engine and rebuild it. Id rather get a used engine and do a simple swap. But I may slowly tear apart my current motor once ive done the swap.

Looks im better off parting the car out rather then replacing the engine. Ill be posting the car in the classifieds its up on SF Bay Area craigslist.

I hope you reconsider and keep the car. Its real sad and real rare for that to happen. One would think that of all the AMG engineers that built the motor for that car, that a simple timing chain would last.

Again sorry to hear that.
I'd be interested in a couple things if you DO part your car out but as i stated before I'd hate to see a car like your C32 broken down in peices.

That's gonna be a whole lotta parts!
I still think you can have the engine rebuilt. A couple of years ago
my old 190e lost compression on one cylinder because of excessive overheating (fan wasn't working). I took it to a mechanic (non-certified on anything!!) who shared his space in a corner gas station.
Rebuilt it in less than two weeks including changing my heater core which meant taking the whole dashboard down!! Oh, he also changed my water pump.
All for about $1250.00. On top of that, since he was an older guy from Asia, he could hardly speak English (never really talked to him in detail). But he knew what he was doing.
My '87 190e now has 331,000 miles and still going.
Just putting things in perspective here.
Otherwise, I got dibs on the SC!

Were you the original owner? I have seen this car at Walnut creek Mercedes maybe 2 or 3 years ago, I remember cuz of the rims on it. Im sorry to hear what happened to your C32

hope you've considered just rebuilding the engine.
This car just has so much potential its hard to think of parting it out.
Put it this way, after rebuilding or swaping the engine, you now have a new,
more or less, C32.

And I can See the frustration already seeing tyT an AMG engine already failed on you without extensive nodding. That plus the fact that the car is already super problematic as it is...
