Tranny fluid change on a C55?

So I dropped off my car this morning for service and my SA was trying to sell me some of the "reccommended items" in adition to my service. One of them was the tranny fluid change along with tranny filter replacement. I thought this was odd so I told him to double check to see if there is such a thing for a C55. He looked up with my vin again and ask one of the tech and said "yes" they do change the tranny fluid and filter. M'i wrong? I thought the C55 tranny was a sealed unit? So I declined all of the other items which I had done myself and let him rape me for an additional $250 bucks for the tranny service.

Its a ' lifetime fluid ' but thats BS you should change it out. It is something you can do at home though. Just get yourself an mb tranny dipstick and your ood to go.

1. drop the pan
2. drain fluid
3. change filter
4. put a new filter in
5. put the pan back in
6. make sure to seal the pan (no leaks)
7. fll up with fluid (its gonna take about 3 quarts)
8. check you fluid level witht the MB dip stick
9. good to go

Sounds easy enough. At what mileage would you recommend a change? Mine has 54k miles on it.

Also, is there a gasket on the pan, or do you just use, say, black RTV?

Thanks Mike, so it is changeable, oh well I'm lazy to do it myself this time, especially getting underneath the car and deal with the fluid. This was a reccommended item, and not required with the service.

When i last visited my Indie he recommended tranny fluid change and seal. That was at 52k. When i drove back home 167 miles i could feel difference in the gear changes. Much smoother. Although there's a cost IMHO its well worth it.

splinter was able to help me with mine. Its relatively easy, you just pump up the tranny fluid from the top of the engine. Then you unbolt the drop pain and change the filter and clean the magnet.

I do recommend changing it, when i changed mine at 85k, the fluid was black.

Factory recommends changing at 45k miles. I had mine done about 44k. Certainly improved the shift characteristics. "Lifetime" tranny fluid, along with all of the other 'lifetime' fluids came about to deal with the J.D. Powers cost of ownership issues. By making it 'lifetime' it makes the car less expensive to own, at least until your tranny pukes itself all over the highway.

Got my car back this evening. Ran it hard a couple of times, I must say the shifting is much better, seemed smoother.
