Cruzinquick - what you didn't specifically address is M (i.e. Motorcycle) vs. SA, as Snell certifies both and they're different in a couple important ways. Motorcycle helmets are rated to a less stringent certification than car racing helmets (not as crashworthy, no fire protection, etc.). I've been to tracks that mandate a helmet for running 13's or faster (per the NHRA rules), and state "a motorcycle helmet doesn't qualify." Which is a shame, since frankly Motorcycle M2005 helmets are considerably cheaper than their car-racing SA2005 counterparts.

You may be confusing motorcycle helmets with DOT certification. None of those meet the requirements of the NHRA. The SA are more of a scrictly racing helmet with the added fire protection you mention. Most classes that require a SA helmet will require a neck restraint as well. Way overkill unless your driving a open bodied car or funny car.
Again a M rated full face helmet allows you to run 13.99 or quicker all the way as fast as you can go in a full bodied car, even 6.00 seconds it's approved for it.
Here are the ratings.
All cars 13.99 or quicker driver must have a helmet with one of the following stickers inside, not on the outside back. If it's there it's usually fake.
