Crush washers are commonly used where you have fluids that may leak at connections (brakes, oil plugs, etc.). They're soft copper (or sometimes aluminum) washers specifically fit for their applications. They "crush" creating a seal when you tighten down.
Most oil plugs use some type of seal type - imbedded non-replaceable o-rings (where you replace the entire plug over time), replaceable o-rings, and in our case, crush washers. Sometimes they'll be included in the oil filter, sometimes not. Because they crush to create a seal, it's advised not to reuse them because they won't "crush" as well, possibly creating a leak.
When I bought my filter at the MB dealer I asked them to throw in a couple crush washers (55 uses two drain plugs). My beater uses an imbedded o-ring in the plug head surface that doesn't need replacing - and after 77k miles hasn't started leaking yet so I'm still using the original plug.

O-rings yes, washers no.
Stealership ticked me off because they charged me damn near 2 dollars for a single washer. I was like wtf, I've never paid more than 10-30 cents for one. I told him I needed a second one for the second plug, and threw it in on the house because he must've figured I wasn't going to pay damn near $4 for a couple of crush washers.
