Oil Leak

I'm so ****ing done with this car it's not even funny.

So, after spending a ridiculous amount of money to diagnose and fix the last problem, I go to a Mini dealership to trade this money pit in and get into something with a warranty. The service guy goes to take a look at my car and informs me that the car is leaking oil all over the service bay. Sure enough, I look under the car and there is a slow but steady drip (once every second or so) coming from the middle of the bottom engine cover.

Now the car needs to go back to the dealership to make sure that they didn't make any mistakes installing the CPS and to locate the leak.

I'm hoping for something simple, but to say that I'm not holding my breath is the understatement of the century.

I have never regretted a decision I've made more than buying this car.

It's probably the rubber O ring of the transmission electrical plug. Less than $10 for part and 1/2 hr labor.

If it is the case, do a search on how to replace it (quite simple).

Good luck!

check the valve covers too. The seals tend to go bad and leak oil. You can do a temp fix and just tighten the screws on the valve cover. They get loose over time.

Oh i thought you had a c32..nm. Kinda weird to leak oil only after 4yrs. But give the valve cover a shot.

How dangerous would it be to drive the car to the dealership tomorrow? How big would the risk be of permanent engine damage?

if its only a little bit of leakage and the engine performance is fine. Just check the oil make sure its full and you should be ok to drive to the dealership.

Yes, check the oil level to make sure it's ok. If it misses like quart or two, you should be ok to drive. You can always buy some oil to add on on the way there.

Keep in mind, the $10 part will turn into $100s and 1/2hr will turn into hrs when you bring it to the stealer.

Good luck!

So, I just spoke with the dealership, and they said when they got the car there was 3 quarts of oil left in it. They put oil back in with a special dye and on monday quality control will be driving the car under load then checking it with an infrared light to see where the leak is coming from.

I'll keep you updated when I hear more.

If it has lost one and a half GALLONS of oil, I can't believe it would be difficult to find the leak. The car never had a low oil warning on the display? I can't believe it could function on 3 quarts when normal is 9. Mine had a valve cover leak, but it never affected the oil level, just made a bit of an oily mess on top.

My valve covers were leaking, so I replaced the gaskets. The passenger's side began leaking after about five months, so I simply pulled the cover, removed the gasket, and coated it with black RTV. Been fine ever since, but I suspect the driver's side will need it sometime, too. Other than that, haven't had any problems with the car in the 10k miles I've driven since February (knock on wood).

Good luck with the fix. Some cars are just jinxed.

Bill

Most often its rear main seal ($$$$) or tranny plug. Tranny plug is piece of cake and is roughly $8-15 for the whole plug (which includes the o-rings & etc).

If its rear main seal just live with it b/c the only time it makes sense to fix rear main seal is if you are rebuilding the transmission, in which case the seal itself is less than $30 usually.
