2017 GLS 550
My other vehicle which isn't currently in FL.
1982 VW Caddy AKA Rabbit Pickup
45hp 1.6L diesel
4+E - 5 speed transmission
rare options - A/C and Power steering
It is in VA right now getting a canadian spec 1.9L TD rated for 75 HP installed (feel the power!)
And runs on Veggie

I own a company that is currently shutdown doing Veggie Conversions. My 300D ran on veg and was going to buy a 1999 E300 TurboDiesel before I decided I wanted something a little more powerful.

Will post some pics later when I can find them of the sweet Caddy

There isn't exactly alot of room under the hood. That's why it's a custom turbo. It took alot of engineering to get everything in. Here is a couple of better pictures. Look hard you'll see it!!

I guess I'm currently contemplating an 05-06 Mini Cooper S. Looks to be a cheap and fun car to drive (and mod lightly), and isn't "just another car". At the same time, I have seen a few 00-01 Porsche 911's for sale. They sure do look nice, just not sure if its practical....

Tick, tick, tick, tick, BOOOM!!! No warning, just a destroyed motor. There is a site called porscheenginefailures.com it is so widespread. Porsche screwed up the design of the bearing and support of the intermediate shaft and it lets go sometimes as early as 10k miles. They left the design wrong from 1999-2007. If you look at a lot of ads for 99-02 911s you'll see "new factory crate engine" There is no repairing the old one because when the intermediate shaft lets go, the cams are out of phase and pistons hit valves etc. The view in the rear view mirror looks like an F1 car letting go. The dealer drops the motor and installs a $13k (not installed) crate engine with the exact same flawed design inside.

It's one of the reasons a nice 1998 911 is $35k and a nice 1999 is $16k. The whole engine block is weak and a bit of a cheap design, the turbo cars have a different block and design and don't have issues. There is a company that makes a fix for the bearing and support, but it's about $3k installed. I would say a must vs. losing a whole engine.

This whole scenario is the reason there is a C55 in my garage today and not a used 911. I told my wife, I couldn't live with the thought that every time I got in my car I would have to wonder if today would be the day we just lost $15k because my engine blew up.

I would suspect that Ferry Porsche is still spinning in his grave at 10,000 rpm. He would have never allowed his name on such a substandard POS. It would have been corrected very early on if he were still alive.

Thanks phil for the info. I haven't really done much research on many of the cars yet, I'm just kicking the idea around. I did notice though that 911's and Boxsters (the other I was considering as well) do have the engine failure problem. Stinks for them!

I think I might go test drive some cars today. Any other recommendations?

There's not much that is in the $ range that's fun, well made, and new enough that it's not junk. I would go drive a Mini first and see what you think. If you really like it you'll know whether or not to keep looking.

There's lots of older stuff, but then you just start rebuilding everything and not driving.

Yea, there isn't much in that range. There's so much more if you kick it up some, but what I'm really saving up for is a 99-02 Viper. Sooooooo no point in buying another $25k car if that's half of the way to the Viper. I do feel like I need a second car though, due to my long commute and just the feeling of having a second car.

well i test drove some yesterday and wasnt really impressed. maybe its because the cars i drove were in poor shape, but the steering felt very heavy, and the car overall did not feel as nimble or sporty as i was expecting...

That is correct!

Its always interesting when you throw a movie quote out there and people just give you weird looks.

My C55 is my one and only (for now). I'm not sure what kind of car I will end up getting next, or when, but I've taken a liking to the MB.
